Obituary of Joyce Pembroke
PEMBROKE, Mary “Joyce” (nee MacIsaac) – It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Pembroke announces her passing at age 88 on the evening of Tuesday, September 14th, at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax.
Born in Antigonish in 1933, Joyce was the daughter of Jack and Mary Belle (nee MacDonald) MacIsaac. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert “Bob” Pembroke, her parents, and brothers Vincent and Jackie. She is survived by her daughter Johneen Kelly, son-in-law Ray Kelly, her beloved granddaughter, Clare Kelly, who was the light of her life, as well as her nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Joan MacIsaac.
After graduating from Mount Saint Bernard, Joyce worked at the Bank of Commerce in Antigonish for several years and also for her father’s business, MacIsaac Funeral Home. Those who knew Joyce would know that she was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage and of being born and raised in Antigonish. Joyce was never shy in sharing her opinions but possessed a (mostly) great sense of humour in doing so. She was known for her colourful phrases, many of which she inherited from her father with whom she shared an exceptionally close and loving relationship. If Joyce was your friend, she was your friend for life, such was her deep sense of loyalty and affection for those she cared for and loved. She will be deeply missed. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff of the Garden Court unit at Parkstone for the wonderful care they provided to her; both when her health was better and, more importantly, when she required more personal care towards the end of her life.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no service in accordance with Joyce’s last wishes. Words of condolence to the family may be made by visiting www.macisaacs.ca. Donations in Joyce’s memory may be made to the HomeBridge Youth Society: www.homebridgeyouth.ca (Choose the “Fundraising” tab and then the “Ways to Give” tab for instructions.)
In keeping with Joyce’s Scottish pride, the motto for MacDonald Clanranald “My hope is constant in thee” and a quote from Dr. Suess, “Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” were words that resonated with her. www.MacIsaacs.ca
