Peacefully passed away on Saturday, Aug.14 2021 at Afton Park Place (Sarnia). He battled Alzheimer’s for eight years. Gates loves his family. Beloved husband of Micheline for 52 years. Loving father of Max (Alice) and Mark (Regan). Cherished grandfather of Nolan, Tanner, Loïc and Clio. Born in 1937 at Bishopton, Quebec to parents Eva and Philibert, he was one of ten Lessard children. He was always a hard worker. Starting with his life on the family farm. Seeking opportunity and adventure in 1960, he joined the Canadian Army, Royal 22nd Regiment (“Van Doos”) in Quebec City. Afterwards, working for five years on the construction of the Manicouagan Reservoir and hydro power station. He began a welding and pipefitting career with the United Association in Sherbrooke, QC. with his lifelong friend Larry. In 1969 moved to Sarnia and become a proud member of Local 663 for 53 years. Lots of amazing family road trips like the one to Gaspe. He worked for many great companies and in 1997 was able to retire and enjoy his grandchildren, golf, biking and digital technology. He was passionate about taking long walks and meeting people for friendly conversations. Gates had a sense of adventure, great work ethic and incredibly innovative. We are honoured to have had him in our lives. “You’re now free to fly anywhere you want.” The family would like to thank everybody involved in his care at Afton. He was very well taken care of. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Gaétan’s wishes, a private family celebration of life will be held at a later time. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia Lambton (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
