Ariagno, Joseph
1941-2021
The family of the late Joseph Louis Ariagno is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Oct. 17, 2021. He was 79. ‘Joe’ was born in Welland, Ont. on Nov. 19, 1941 to his late parents Dominic Ariagno and Ida Soos (nee Martine). After the death of his father, Joe enjoyed a close relationship with his stepfather, Gordon Soos. Joe built his life with equal parts hard work, love and dedication to faith. His appreciation of family, business and community made Joe’s life immensely rewarding, and his legacy will live on through a soft-spoken manner that beguiled a drive to succeed. He will be missed beyond measure. Joe married the love of his life, Mae Luella Schaeffer, on Nov. 9, 1968 in Stratford, Ont. Joe’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have adopted his zeal for life and focus on hard work. Joe was the consummate family man, who built a foundation for life through close relationships and the support of loved ones. Beginning in the 1960s, Joe spent decades in the textile industry, honing his craft in places like Stratford (Collins & Aikman), Kingston (Kingston Spinners) Huntingdon/Ormstown/Montreal, Que. (Zephyr), and Cornwall (Cornwall Spinners, Twistex) before opening his own operation, Seaway Yarns, in 1990. Seaway Yarns has gone on to become a pillar in the textile industry, with clients and contacts in the United States and Europe. In 1998 it was named ‘Company of the Year’ by Textile Society of Canada. The Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce named Seaway Yarns the Industry of the Year in 2009. Joe’s sons, Donald and Robert, have followed in their father’s footsteps and continue to guide Seaway Yarns into the future. Joe also gave of himself through volunteer work with the Cornwall Kiwanis Club from 1990 to 2000, including time as president. Another of his passions was sports. When Joe played hockey, you could find him in the net as a goalie. He loved to golf and play football. In later life, he could be found watching televised games of all kinds from his Long Sault home. He was a Cornwall Aces, Cornwall Colts and Ottawa Senators season-ticket holder. Joe had a special place in his heart for winters spent in the sunny confines of Florida, where family would often visit. He attended church weekly with Mae at his side, quietly professing his love of God and commitment to Christ. Joe is survived by his wife Mae Luella Schaeffer, his brother Donald Ariagno of Etobicoke, Ont., his children Lynda Palmer (Eric) of Kingston, Donald (Judi) of Martintown, Robert (Cindy Scott) of Maxville and Judy Ariagno (Chris Bryce) of Ottawa, his grandchildren Matthew, Nathan, Evan, Isabel, Sarah, Kayla, Maddie and Brady and his great-grandchildren Crosby and Jordyn. An attendance-controlled visitation will take place Friday, Oct. 22, 2021 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall Ont. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, 8 College Street, Ingleside Ont. Masks and physical distancing are required at all gatherings.Joe’s family would like to acknowledge and thank some outstanding medical caregivers throughout the years, including Dr. Ghantous and the angels at Bayshore Home Health. Your dedication, professionalism and love were a fixture in Joe’s life. Memorial donations to the local chapters of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Carefor would be appreciated by the family.
