John Neustadter passed away at the age of 91, on 24th January 2021, in Saskatoon. He was predeceased by his mother Sarah Neustadter (1979), his sister Helene Link (2009), his sister Mary Reichert (2013) and his brother Peter Neustadter (2017). He is survived by a younger sister Anna Boldt (Abbotsford).
John was born 21st March 1929, to German Mennonite parents, Franz and Sarah Neustadter, in Selena Ukraine.
With the help of Mennonite Central Committee, his family immigrated to Canada in 1949 and eventually arrived in Hepburn, Saskatchewan.
In 1952, John built a home in Saskatoon where he and his mother could live. Sarah, in turn cooked great meals and gave him good advice. They lived together until Sarah’s death in 1979.
John initially worked at several seasonal jobs and was finally employed in Saskatoon at the Co-operative Creamery in the early 50s. He always said they made the best ice cream. Eventually, he acquired a position at the Co-op Feed plant in 1958 and worked there until his retirement in 1994. He was an active union worker, having served on the executive for several years. He was also an avid bowler with the house bowling league and his many trophies were a testament to his skill.
In retirement, he pursued hobbies of hunting, gardening, lawn mowing, tree trimming and snow shovelling for friends and neighbours. He lovingly cared for his Thunderbird and talked about it for many years after. He valued his brother and sisters and enjoyed their children and grandchildren. He was quick to show up for a good meal and conversation. He read the newspaper to the end, was informed, and quite opinionated, particularly regarding the conduct of politicians. He spent time with his nieces and nephews and their children, taking them to Dairy Queen, A&W, fishing, hunting, and going to Riders games. He was an avid Rider fan and talked about them constantly. He was a member of the Central Mennonite Church and later attended West Portal Mennonite Brethren Church.
John’s funeral will be by invitation only and held at Martens Warman Funeral Home on Saturday 30th January 2021. You are welcome to join us virtually at 1:00 pm at www.distantlink.com/martenswarman.html.
John will be laid to rest in Hepburn, Saskatchewan.
He will be lovingly remembered by the family and friends.
