John Kenneth Shields Monday September 20th 2021

SHIELDS, John Kenneth
April 23, 1956 – September 20, 2021
Peacefully on his own terms, after a battle with cancer, at the age of 65. Dear son of the late Ken and the late Enid [Menzies] Shields. Cherished big brother to Susan Flanagan [David] of Toronto and Gillian Shields of Gatineau. Loving uncle to the best nephews and nieces in the world — Andrew, Courtney, Carlos, and Carmen. Devoted guardian to Bryson, the sweetest, most affectionate cat ever.
A stalwart defender of the Oxford comma, a film noir afficionado, and a fanatical devotee of Monty Python from the comedy troupe’s inception in 1969. Apparently, at one point, John could recite most of the major Monty Python skits from memory, much to the delight, or possibly chagrin, of family and friends. More importantly, however, John was a dedicated public servant for 31 years who, amazingly enough, managed to retire with his sanity intact. Although John never worked for the Ministry of Silly Walks, he liked to think that he did realize a few great leaps forward that left their mark in government.
Much thanks and gratitude to the doctors and nurses on John’s palliative care team, who provided superlative treatment throughout the course of his illness. Their dedication and support were much appreciated. And a special mention to John’s wonderful friends and neighbours, who ensured that John’s refrigerator was always well-stocked with groceries and who were also willing to take the time to go for walks with John to help maintain his stamina. Their kindness and generosity represent all that is best in humanity.
Although it is said one should never die with any regrets, John did express regret that he would not live to see the completion of Ādisōke, the new, beautifully designed central Ottawa Public Library at the edge of LeBreton Flats. A landmark piece of architecture that will serve the community well for decades to come.
Family and friends are invited to visit the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) Ottawa, on Friday, September 24th from 4 – 8 pm. Following Covid protocol, attendance will be strictly limited to registered guests. To RSVP, please visit the bottom of John’s obituary page. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, September 25th at 2 pm. As limited spaces are available, those who wish to attend must RSVP below. For those who wish to participate virtually, the Service will also be Livestreamed and can be accessed by using the following link:
In lieu of flowers, John requested that family and friends make donations to either the Ottawa Humane Society or Global Sanctuary for Elephants, two charities close to his heart.
