Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John who passed away at La
Salle Retirement Community in Burlington after a lengthy battle with cancer on
Saturday, April 24th, 2021 at 95 years of age. He was the devoted husband to Suzy
for 45 years, loving stepdad to Debbie (Sandy), proud Papa to Jeffrey and Breken
(Alicia) and adoring Great-papa to Katrina, Marcus, and Jameson. He is also
survived by his niece, Barbara, and nephew, Danny, and their families in
Switzerland.
Born to Rudolph and Emma in Switzerland, then raised on a farm in France, John
emigrated to Canada in 1951. He initially worked on Ontario farms and eventually
applied his talents as an inspector with the Department of Agriculture.
In 1975, John was introduced to Suzy by her niece who knew personally what a
wonderful man he was. Within a few months, John and Suzy were married. They
settled in Midland and later moved to the village of Eden Mills near Guelph after
John began working at the Toronto Airport. John was an active member of the small
community. They enjoyed a wonderful life there for 33 years before moving from the
home they loved to a retirement community in Burlington at the end of 2019 to be
closer to family.
Suzy and John loved to travel and enjoyed trips to many destinations including
Europe, Hawaii, eastern Canada, and their favourite, Aruba. They also bought a
motorhome and with it, they toured Ontario and parts of the USA, as far south as
Florida’s Disney World. They spent some time at the family cottage with their
daughter’s family and when John’s brother, Charlie, visited from Switzerland. In later
years, they enjoyed playing cards or Scrabble together. With his ability to speak four
languages, John excelled at word games, although some of his words were
questionable.
John will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a kind and generous man
who was only too willing to help anyone who asked. He eagerly participated in
community events and loved family get-togethers.
The family would like to thank workers from LHIN and the staff of La Salle for all of
the help provided to manage John’s care and comfort.
Cremation has occurred. Due to Covid-19, a memorial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Canadian Cancer Society would be welcome.
