John Allison Jack Murphy 1923 2021

Obituary for
John Allison « Jack » Murphy
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father John Allison Murphy (Jack) on January 7, 2021 at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, in Halifax, at the age of 97. After having afternoon visits with his children he died peacefully that evening.
He was born on April 4,1923 in Truro, NS to William Boyd Murphy and Jennie (Dunbar) Murphy. Jack attended school in Truro before entering the Navy in 1942 where he served overseas during WWII on the HMCS Iroquois, participating in the Arctic Convoy known as the Murmansk Run. Upon return to Truro after the war Jack joined his father WB Murphy to work at WB Murphy’s Wholesale. Jack opened the well known Murphy’s Restaurant on Prince Street in the late 1940’s. In addition, he became one of the first owners of the Dairy Queen Franchise in Nova Scotia, situated next to Murphy’s Restaurant. Jack was a hard working business man. He had a unique sense of humour and those of us who knew him well enjoyed the twinkle in his eye and his hearty laughter. He was a very supportive husband and loving father and he will be missed dearly by his family. He met the love of his life, and future wife Mary Becher from Springhill in 1947. They were married in 1949 and went on to have six children. Jack enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes, spending time at Spencer’s Point in the summer, going fishing at the camp in Liscomb with his friends, weekly games of bridge and he also liked to beat anyone in a good game of cribbage.
Jack is survived by his children Dean (Kathie) Murphy of Truro, Jenny MacDonald (Bob) of Bible Hill, Joyce Smith of St. John’s NL, Nancy Moore (Bruce) of Valley, Dave (Anne) Murphy of Truro, Robert (Michelle) Murphy of Truro, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Mary, his grandson Michael Smith, son-in-law Ken Smith, siblings Jean, Bill, Doug, Elaine, and Anne. The family is grateful to the staff of 5East Camp Hill for all of their care and support. Very special thanks to his dear friend and care giver Lois MacLean.
A private Memorial Service (due to COVID-19 restrictions) will be held Wednesday, January 13 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. The family invite you to join them for the service via webcast beginning at 12:58pm (AT) on the above date. You will find the webcast link on the left side of the obituary. Interment will be held at a later date in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro.
