Obituary
Joan Margaret (Lally) Charlton
Joan was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 17. 1932, and passed away peacefully at Holyrood Manor, Maple Ridge. BC on November 15, 2021 at the age of 89.
She is predeceased by her husband Ted, her brother John, and sister Grace. She is survived by her sister Mary Bonner, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joan graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing School in Montreal in 1953, and started her long-time career in nursing shortly after. In 1954 she came to Vancouver, and for the next six years she was back and forth from the east coast to the west coast. When Joan finally settled in Vancouver, she worked for 14 years at St. Vincent’s hospital, before she started at Vancouver General, as an I.V. nurse. She worked at VHG until she and her husband Ted moved to Boundary Bay in 1980.
With the move also came a new hospital for Joan, as she started working at Delta Hospital, where she later became a supervisor in the ER. Joan was very dedicated to her nursing career and her community. She retired after 15 years, and went on to becoming a volunteer.
Joan had great love for animals, and especially her cats Charlie and Arnold. Joan and Charlie, and later Arnold, volunteered with the BC Pets and Friends program, going to nursing homes. She gave her time and love without asking for anything in return.
We all remember Joan as a kind, quiet, humble and generous person. She had a caring attitude and an intelligent witty humour.
She was a wonderful aunt to all her nieces, nephews and nieces-in-law. Even some of her younger cousins called her Aunt Joan.
Joan had many friends who she loved socializing with. She was always up for an adventure, and travelled all over the U.S. and Europe.
Unfortunately, Joan was Diagnosed with Parkinson’s later in life. She took her illness in stride, she was brave, faithful and endurant in how she faced her old age and losses. In spite of her battle with Parkinson’s, she contributed to her residence to the best of her ability. The isolation during Covid added to her suffering, but she always tried to be cheerful and positive.
When asked once how she managed with all that was hard, she answered quite seriously: “I see this as doing my time in purgatory, so I am thinking when I go, I’ll be quicker to heaven.”
Rest in peace Aunt Joan, may you have found the peace and joy you anticipated
