Joan Bruce Stephenson Friday November 26th 2021

In Loving Memory of Joan Bruce (nee Stephenson)
At the age of 93, Joan passed away peacefully at her home, with her daughters by her side.
Predeceased by husband Milton “Red” Bruce in 2016. Loving mother of daughters Lynne (Wayne Gutjahr) and Kathy (Ken MacLean). She will be missed by grandchildren Stephanie Zakamarko (Nathan) and Steven MacLean (Jen), and was a cherished great-grandma to Reid, Caleb, Corbin, Jake, and Mila.
Joan had a special place in the hearts of her extended family Kristine (Gutjahr) Germaine, her husband Roger and children Kennedy and Ryan. She will be deeply missed by lifelong friends Mary, Glenys, and Helen.
Born and raised in Creighton Mine, Joan was baptized and married at Fraternity United Church. She and Milton continued to live in Creighton until they relocated to Lively where she became a member of Trinity United Church. Joan was an active participant in community life in Creighton. She bowled at the Creighton Club, was a Girl Guide leader and enjoyed many church activities. For many years she worked as a cashier at Fievoli’s IGA store. She created many lasting friendships which brought her a great deal of joy. Joan was a very kind and thoughtful person who dedicated her life to caring for her family. Her favourite place to be was the kitchen, cooking great meals and baking special treats. She was always looking for new recipes. Everyday household tasks were done with love and care. Somehow she found time to sew and knit and preserve, leaving us with beautiful dresses, comfy hats and mittens and our favourite pickles. Joan continued her life, simply and quietly, always putting others before herself; a beautiful person who will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by many.
We are extremely grateful to many who have helped with Mom’s care along the way. Family physician Dr. Valerie Mantle and staff, Dr. James Chau and Nadine from the Northeast Specialized Geriatric Services and the staff at North East LHIN. For several years we have appreciated the tireless efforts of our longterm Bayshore PSWs , Kate, Celeste, Kelsey, Karen and Julie. The support of the Alzheimer’s Society has been invaluable.
Most recently, Dr. Walton and the Community Hospice Palliative Care Team have guided and helped us to allow our Mom to end her journey peacefully in her own home. Special thanks to nurse Dustin Duffy who has been with us every step along the way, enriching our lives with his compassion, dedication and support. To all of you, as well as our families and friends, we will never forget the love and support that you have shown us. We will always be grateful.
