Jeffrey Allan Kubinec
November 21, 1957 – February 22, 2021
It is with profound sadness the family announces the unexpected passing of Dr. Jeff Kubinec at the age of 63.
Jeff was born in Fort William, Ontario on November 21, 1957. Growing up, he took part in many local sports including hockey, and baseball. He had the pleasure of coaching, as well as being a player. He also spent many hours refereeing hockey with his dad, John.
Jeff attended local schools, graduating top of his class from Churchill Highschool. He then went on to attend the University of Guelph, graduating in 1983 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He returned to Thunder Bay and began practising at local veterinary hospitals. He later went on to establish his own practise, culminating in his life long dream of building his own facility, the Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital. He was also supportive of many local pet charities, establishing Darcy’s Pet Charity Leash-a-thon which raised thousands of dollars.
Jeff was deeply involved in the Catholic faith. Over the years, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus eventually taking the position of Grand Knight of Council #1447. He was also very involved in local Catholic ministries and at St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was always very supportive of people looking to pursue deepening their faith in Christ, facilitating many online programs and prayer groups.
Jeff was a very loving and devoted father. He never missed a sports event or tournament, traveling extensively to watch his children participate in hockey, baseball and cheerleading. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching and playing various sports with his son, Connor, and always made time to play catch or go to the outdoor rinks with him. He also enjoyed various outdoor walks and hikes with his daughter, Holly. Jeff continually supported and encouraged both his daughter and son to pursue their dreams and ambitions.
After many years of devotion to his practise in Veterinary medicine, he retired in September 2017 to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a very loving and dedicated Grampa, spending countless hours caring for and playing with his grandchildren, Cooper and Calla. He never missed the opportunity to take part in any activity they were involved in including tobogganing, skating, building Legos, and even got involved in coaching their T-ball and hockey. His grandchildren will miss him deeply.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Colleen; his children Holly (Allan) and Connor; his grandchildren, Cooper and Calla; his siblings, Brenda Dubois (Don), Debbie McMahon, Mike Kubinec (Marisa), Kevin Kubinec (Erin); as well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Vivian (Bunty) Kubinec.
His sudden and unexpected passing will leave a void that can never be filled. He will be missed very greatly by his family, friends and former clients. We cannot express what an incredible person he was, always putting others before himself.
