It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Deacon Jean-Paul Laniel, on January 22, 2021, at the age of 82.
He will be deeply missed by his sister Eglina (Ray), his brothers Tom (Pat) and Jerry (Marilyn), his nephew Kevin, and many relatives and friends.
The family will receive condolences on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 10h00 am to 11h00 am before the funeral.
A funeral service will be held on Monday February 1, 2021 at 11:00 am at Sainte-Geneviève Church.
Jean-Paul Laniel was born and raised in New Jersey, the third child of five from a devout Catholic family of Irish-Italian descent. After two years of study at New Jersey’s Seton Hall University, he joined the Franciscan teaching Brothers of Brooklyn in 1958, where he completed his first bachelor’s degree, majoring in French. He then went on to work on a master’s degree in French at New York University until he left the Franciscan order five and a half years later.
In 1964, he came to Montréal to pursue a career in education and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from McGill. During that period, he taught grades four through nine at various time.
In 1987, Jean-Paul had a strong religious Awakening with a deep commitment to our Lord and his church. Through his affiliation with the Legion of Mary, he was introducted to a Christian training program and preparation for the diaconate in 1994, and completed the four year program along with a master’s degree in theology from Concordia University in May, 1998. The topic of his research paper was the mission of the Christ as expressed in Vatican II, he has since become very active in his Parish of Sainte-Geneviève, and as part of his diaconate Ministry, he has also been involved in ministering to the sick, as a member of the Pastoral team at the Lakeshore general hospital in 1995.
Jean-Paul retired from teaching in 1996, and has enjoyed a very active and interesting life.
