James Edward Anderson

19 juillet 2021
Comforted by his loving family, passed away peacefully in his 88th year on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Ridgeview Long Term Care Home, Hamilton. Predeceased by his first wife Maureen (1987), and second wife Sheila (2017). Loving father to Sue (Rob) Lowel, Patti (Bob Berkhout) Anderson, Jamie (Judy) Anderson, Jennifer (Sean Kelly) Anderson, Nancy (Mark) Wingrove, Jody (Colleen) Anderson, nineteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Loving step-father to Tim Galvin of Tampa, Florida. Jim is survived by his brother Dan Anderson, and will be missed by his sister June Anderson, sister-in-law Shirley Anderson, brothers-in-law Rob and Kevin Carson as well as the extended Anderson and Carson family clans.
Jim’s long-held conviction that education is the foundation for a just society was recognizable early in his life. Born in Hamilton and earning his BA at McMaster University, he began his career as a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society in Brantford. He began his teaching career in Sault Ste. Marie where he was also an executive member of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation. Over his 35 year career, Jim taught in various other Ontario locations including Marmora, Port Colborne and eventually Welland where he retired as head librarian at Centennial Secondary School.
An eloquent speaker and writer, Jim also used his talents in public service through seeking candidacy in federal politics and in participation at the local level. He was also involved in community service at the Wainfleet Historical Society, Public Library, and the Lions Club. Jim served on the Rehabilitate the Old Feeder Canal committee, as well as actively supported efforts to increase recreation opportunities in the Wainfleet Township where he lived with his family for over 20 years. He leaves behind a legacy of a love for learning and social justice that inspired not only his students but most especially his children and grandchildren. Being present in the Anderson home with Jim at the head of the table meant lively dinners with storytelling and provocative conversation, sprinkled with sentiments that pushed hard against insensitivity, intolerance and prejudice; planting the seeds with his family and guests that we are not good until we are all good.
A world traveller, avid reader, lover of music, fine food, and all things Irish, Jim was most content in the company of his large, noisy family with the simplest of things. Admittedly imperfect, Jim’s gentle spirit and quick wit ensured that no one left his company without feeling better and happier. We say goodbye but will never forget a treasured father and grandfather who was a wonderful model of all that is good and important in a life that is well-lived, and well-loved. As Jim himself would say, “Top Damn Notch!”
Special thank you to the loyal and attentive staff at Ridgeview Long Term Care Home for their outstanding care of Jim during his stay. Most especially for their tender and loving support of Jim during the Covid crisis when he was able to see only a small number of his large family due to restrictions. As per Jim’s wishes, a private family service will take place at Bay Gardens Funeral Home followed by a Catholic burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington. In tribute to Jim and in lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
