Obituary of Jack Harper
HARPER, John « Jack » William
‘I did it my way’
April 29, 1925 – May 8, 2021
Jack passed away peacefully at home just a week after celebrating his 96th birthday. Predeceased by his wife Beryl (2006), he is survived by his children Nancy and Bill (Elkin), Debbie Harper and Bill and Beth Harper: As well as his grandchildren Ashley Elkin, Jonathan (Julie) Elkin, Jessica Harper (Tyler Fossey), Erin Harper and great granddaughters, Adelaide and Lillian Elkin. He will also be missed by his loyal canine companion J.J.
Jack was born and raised in St. Catharines and worked as a general contractor his entire life. He formed Jack W. Harper Construction in 1954. As an amateur historian he could (and would) tell you who built every house, school and building in the city, for whom and when. He was a long-time member of Welland Avenue United Church and subsequently Silver Spire United Church. Jack joined the St. Catharines Golf and County Club in 1947; making him the longest standing member at almost 75 years. He and Beryl enjoyed golfing and curling and made lifelong friends there. Many a happy celebration for Jack and his family and friends took place at the golf club. Jack spent every summer since 1949 at his beloved cottage in Huntsville. First at the family cottage on OxBow Lake and since 1975 at their cottage, PenMar on Pen Lake. Not one to sit around, he enjoyed puttering, gardening, renovating and making lists for future jobs! Everyone who knew Jack will miss receiving a jar of his much-coveted prize-winning jam.
Thanks to long-time caregivers, Norly and Magdalyn, and to PSWs and nurses from the LHIN. A Private family gathering will take place and a Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.
