Obituary
Peacefully on Sunday May 9th, 2021 with family by her side Isabel drifted off into her final rest. Predeceased by her parents, Janet (Nettie) and William (Bill), brothers Bert and David, great-grandchildren Rebecca and Kale, Isabel leaves to mourn her passing children Cindi (Fulton) Proud, their children Jason (Sarah), Tyler (Michelle), Dustin (Bobbi), Ashlee (Peter), Shauna (Dan), Jessica (Klayton), Jordan (Lisa), Daniel (Kalena), Gavin, Victoria, and Jenna; son Darren (Tara) Roberts and their children: Samantha (Ryan), Kristie (Justin), Blake (Nicole), and daughter Tammy (Ken), children Travis (Jenn), Crystal, Marshall and Dylan, and 38 great-grandchildren.
Isabel was born on April 1st,1930, in MacGregor, Manitoba. She was the second child of Nettie and Bill Vallance. Isabel spent her early years on the family farm in Bagot, Manitoba, spending her time with brothers Bert and David, and cousins Georgina, Mae and Alex. She attended Southend School. In 1943 the family moved to Winnipeg, where Isabel spent countless hours during these war years as a young lady babysitting and doing odd jobs for the wives of military men. She then started working for Sam Diamond at a drug store while still in high school, and graduated in 1947 from Daniel McIntyre. After graduation she started her working career at Eaton’s Department Store, and then Beaver Lumber. Her love of fashion, jewelry and travelling was evident during this time. She took many trips throughout Canada and the US with friends and family, including watching a Dodgers baseball game in California.
Not typical for that time, Isabel had a career first, then started a family with Doug Roberts at age 31, welcoming Cindi, Darren and Tammy. The family lived in East Kildonan, making many memories of trips down town, childhood friends, and community clubs. In 1973, Isabel and the kids moved to Portage La Prairie, and her life as a single mom raising kids began. She began cleaning homes, and spent many years walking all over town to her jobs, making meaningful friends and connections in the process. Being a single mom in the 1970’s was not easy, but Isabel faced these challenges with independence and determination. During this time she made many lifelong friends as she had a huge heart and amazing cleaning abilities very rare would she ever miss a day of work. You could see her walking no matter what the weather, ski pants and scarves in the winter and shorts and t-shirts in the summer, head down (finding a fair amount of coins along the way) and at a pace that made it hard to keep up with her. Mom loved working in her garden, walking with friends, and more than anything visiting with countless people. Mom always had an open door and a pot of coffee on for whoever should happen to stop by. We are grateful for wonderful friends such as Linda Green, Wilma Shirliff, Anne Teghtmeyer and Diane Kitson.
Mom chose to devote her life to her kids and grandkids, who would never leave her home without being full of food and full of love. It didn’t matter the occasion, her grandkids close by were gifted with Christmas Dresses, red shirts for Valentine’s Day, Green ones for St. Patrick’s day, trips to MCC and Midtown Market. She sat on many a hard benches and lawn chairs for grandkids sports and activities. Her family far away enjoyed many a gift baskets sent on special occasions, and visits to help out when a new member of the family was welcomed.
No matter what life threw her way she always had a smile, and a good joke or laugh. She would save them up and write them down for her phone chats with son-in-law Fulton.
Mom suffered some health issues in 2009, and her home became the LPM. There were up and down moments since then, but she always remained with a smile on her face. She loved visits from grandkids and great-grandkids, and especially visits from her daughter Cindi when she would fly here and spend the days reminiscing and spoiling her as much as she could. We are grateful for the staff at LPM that became Isabel’s extended family and caregivers these past few years
Due to current Covid restrictions, a memorial will be planned when family and friends can gather at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice.
May you rest now mom your hard work is done.
