HENRY BERGMANN
November 2, 1941 – March 21, 2021
Peacefully at home and surrounded by love, Henry Bergmann went to be with his eternal Saviour in heaven.
Henry will forever be cherished by his loving wife of 55 years Susan, children Dave (Susan) and their son Josh, John (Wendy) and their children Caleb, Hannah, Avery and Megan, Kristine Haberman (Craig) and their children Nicholas, Jack and Maggie, Dianne Thomas (Shawn) and their children Ruby and Ben. He was predeceased by his oldest grandson Jesse in 2015. Henry will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandpa, loyal brother, uncle and friend.
Dad was born to Alfred and Justina Bergmann of Glenlea and grew up and worked on the farm with his brothers for 70 years. Dad accepted Jesus into his life at an early age and was baptized upon confession of his faith in Jesus when he was thirteen years old. He married his elementary school sweetheart, Susie Wiens in 1965 and together, they established a safe home full of love and warmth. Dad worked hard and selflessly to build a life for his family and farming was a passion of his until his dying days. Dad was a man of integrity; his yes was always yes and his no was no. He strove to treat others with grace and kindness, always quick to offer an encouraging word.
Dad was fervent in sharing God’s love with others. He served faithfully in church, taught religion classes and distributed Bibles for the Gideons. More than anything though, Dad had a passion for people and built relationships with them – be that with drivers that came to the farm, gas bar attendants, the cashiers at Superstore, through volunteer work at Pembina Place and Riverwood Square or his neighbours, Dad cared about others and wanted them to know Jesus’ deep love for them.
Dad and Mom moved off the farm and into Winnipeg in 2011. Their new home always had an open door and given that all kids and grandkids were within a five kilometer radius, many more relaxed meals, visits and conversations happened over the past ten years. Thankfully, Dad still could visit the farm regularly and stay up to date with all the happenings there.
In late 2014, Dad was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and in the summer of 2020, Dad’s health took a steady decline. God blessed us with a few additional unexpected months with Dad and he and Mom quickly established a new morning routine. This involved drinking coffee in bed, reading scripture and praying together – all while holding hands and enjoying time together. Their commitment was solid and beautiful, rooted in God’s goodness and love, and we are grateful for Dad’s example and legacy. He was a pillar of the faith, a cheerleader for his kids and grandkids and a prayer warrior for so many. He will be dearly missed.
As a family, we are thankful for all the support and care we have received from our extended and church families, friends, neighbours and health care providers.
A private memorial service is planned at Friends Funeral Service on Saturday, March 27 at 2:00 pm, followed by a committal service at the Glenlea Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed and can be viewed by following the links at www.friendsfs.ca/ .
If anyone wishes, donations can be made in Dad’s memory to The Gideons Canada (www.gideons.ca/give/other-giving-options/shop-expressions) or the Canadian Food Grains Bank (foodgrainsbank.ca/) .
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
