Surrounded by his family, Hedley Rogers, of Catalina, passed away on November 3rd after battling cancer.
Born on the island of Sydney Cove in Bonavista Bay, Hedley moved to Elliston with his parents and siblings during the resettlement at the age of 10. He was a high school teacher for several years, meeting his wife of 50 years, Cavell (Newbury) during this time. Upon moving to Catalina, Hedley spent many years as an office clerk. He was very competent at whatever he decided to do, including being Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors for St. Catherine’s Haven or building model schooners. Hedley was a Lifetime Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Catalina and held many different roles over the years. He had a good sense of humor, but not everyone saw that side of him. His younger siblings always labelled him as the “serious” brother in the family. He always enjoyed driving around town in his old red car and having a chat up on the square.
Hedley is predeceased by parents Malcolm and Adeline Rogers; brother, Fred.
Leaving to mourn:
Wife Cavell; Daughters Zona Cox (Dion) and Alana Rogers (Chris Parsons); and Grandson, Blake Cox.
Brothers: Gideon (Dallas), Norman (Bonnie), Malcolm (Donna)
Sisters: Jessie Chaulk, Lydia Baker, Joan Hiscock, Beverly Tremblett (Donald), Barbara Chard (Bradley)
And his King’s Point boys: Ira Newbury (Geneva), Wayne Newbury (Marion), Rev. Sidney Newbury (Olive)
As well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Visitation will take place at Strathie’s Funeral Home, Catalina, on Sunday, November 7th, from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm.
Funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Catalina, on Monday, November 8th at 1:00pm.
