Peacefully at Alexandra Marine & General Hospital, Goderich on Sunday, August 1, 2021 Margaret Annetta (Glenn) Hayter of Goderich and formerly of Varna in her 98th year. Margaret (Marg) was the loving wife of the late William Mervyn Hayter (1994). Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Darlene and Marshal Babych of Delburne, Alberta, and Glenn and Lois Hayter of Zurich. Adored grandmother of Janine and Steven Dickinson, Libby Rowe and Bill Hayter, and Meghan and David Haggitt. Great-grandmother of Cole, Jack, and Samuel (Sam) Dickinson, Quentin (Quinn), Philippa (Pippa), and Lucy Hayter-Rowe, and Taya and Alexis (Lexi) Haggitt. Also missed by several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Predeceased by her parents Mabel (McTaggart) and John Glenn as well as her brothers and sisters-in-law Gerald and Ardys Glenn, and Bruce and Jessie Glenn.
Marg grew up on the Boundary Road dividing Huron and Perth Counties east of Hensall. She completed her schooling in Lumley Public School and attended business school in Clinton in the early 1940s. After graduating from business school, she started to work for the Bank of Montreal in Zurich where she met Mervyn Hayter who became the love of her life. She transferred to the Bank of Montreal in Hensall where she met Barbara Anderson who became her life-long friend. In September of 1948 Marg married Mervyn and they purchased a farm at the east edge of the village of Varna. They moved to the farm in the spring of 1949 where they raised their children, and became members of the community.
Marg started attending the Varna United Church in the spring of 1949 and was a faithful life-long member of the Varna United Church Women’s group. Her commitment to her faith and her church continued when the Varna United Church merged with other churches to become the Brucefield Community United Church. In September of 2018, Marg moved to Goderich Place Retirement Residence where she made many new friends. She truly enjoyed the card games and visiting with her friends and family. When Covid prevented visitors in the spring of 2020, Marg adapted by learning how to use an IPad and Facebook Messenger to keep in touch with her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 370 William Street, EXETER on Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, each person must RSVP for the visitation, please click “Register Now” below to register.
A private family funeral service will be held at Brucefield Community United Church on Saturday, August 7th at 11 AM with Rev. Randy Banks officiating. Interment McTaggart Cemetery, Usborne Township.
