Hans Wieland, at the age of 94, passed away peacefully at the Collingwood General and Marine hospital on December 17th, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Hans leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years Trudy, his son Markus Wieland, daughter Sonja Hamilton (Matt) and his granddaughters Jordan and Sarah Hamilton. He also leaves his brother and dear friend Matthias Wieland and many loved nephews and nieces in his home country of Austria. Hans is predeceased by his brothers Jacob and Peter, and sisters Aloisia and Katherina.
Hans was born to Peter and Katherina Wieland in Tweng, Austria on November 22nd, 1927. Growing up in the mountains of Austria, Hans developed a love and passion for the sport of skiing which he would carry with him his entire life. Following their immigration to Canada, Hans and Trudy settled in the Blue Mountains after Hans accepted the role of Ski School Director at the newly formed Georgian Peaks Ski Club in 1960. Hans was passionate about innovative programming, building a best-in-class ski school and race program at the club he called home. During his career, Hans would earn his Austrian Coaches Certificate, Level 3 CSCF, and Level 4 CSIA Examiner designation. He was a guest coach of the Canadian National Ski Team, President of the CSIA, and inducted into the Ontario Ski Hall of Fame in 1986 for his outstanding contribution to the sport of skiing. At the same time, Hans, together with Trudy, founded the Slalom Gate Ski Shop at the base of Georgian Peaks in 1966, which he operated until his retirement in 1997.
Hans retired at the young age of 70 to a beautiful stretch of shoreline on southern Georgian Bay. He spent his retirement years with a daily 18 holes of golf in the summer and skiing all winter at Blue Mountain and Georgian Peaks. During the off seasons, he was either at golf camp in Florida or ski camp in Vail perfecting his skills for the upcoming season of course. His other interests included traveling with Trudy and tending to his meticulous garden and property. Hans would enjoy evening sunsets by the water after a long day of activities, often expressing his gratitude for family, friends, and the retirement lifestyle he so much enjoyed.
While Hans lived most of his adult life in Canada, his ties to Austria and his family there remained strong. Today, his children and grandchildren have close relationships with their extended Austrian family because of that. He will be dearly missed both here in Canada and in the region of Salzburg, Austria.
Hans’ family would like to thank the staff at Sunset Manor in Collingwood for their loving day to day personal care. A very special thank you to Dr. Mike Lewin for his exceptional attention to Hans’ healthcare journey over many years and in his final stages of life.
A Celebration of Life will be held in early 2022, pending scheduling, where all who knew Hans are welcome to come and celebrate the life of a great man. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation.
