With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Gregory Michael Cordy after a brief battle with cancer, on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, while surrounded by love. Born July 18, 1952, he was the son of the late Bill and Ava (Baxendale) Cordy.
Greg’s career was spent working for the NSLC, and in retirement he worked as a crossing guard, which suited him well, as he loved to be outside and to laugh with the students and their parents.
In his younger years, he was an incredible athlete, playing hockey, baseball and basketball. He continued to share his love of sports with hundreds of children where he found his true passion as a coach. Greg coached hockey and basketball at various levels, but enjoyed the most success coaching baseball. He led his players, including his sons, to numerous provincial titles, a Canadian National Championship and a trip to the 2004 Big League Baseball World Series in South Carolina. He was recognized for his contribution to sport with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, and was inducted into the Northside Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of the 1979 Sydney Mines Colts hockey team. In recent years, he discovered a great love of golf and enjoyed many early morning rounds with his sons and friends. He will also be missed by the many people he met and chatted with on his daily walks around town.
Greg is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years Joyce (MacLean), his children Lori (Alvin) LeBlanc, Nancy Kelly, Ryan (Breagh), and Steven (Brittany), and the little loves of his life, Ben, Abby, Drew, Beau, and Everly. Also left to mourn are his brother Bob (Jane), sisters Laurenda Nimmo, Patrice (Allan) MacNeil, Debbie (Jude) MacDonald, Tina (Bill) Swain, and sisters-in-law Valerie Cordy and Barbara Kearnes, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Billy, brother-in-law Randy Kearnes and niece Kimberly.
Our Dad expressed his love and devotion to his family through action. Whether it was to fix a flat tire, unclog a drain, gyprock a wall, or drive us home late at night, we knew without fail he was there for us.
We love and miss you Pa.
Visitation for Greg Cordy will take place Wednesday, October 13, 2021, from 6-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Covid 19 proof of vaccine will be required at the funeral home.
