Grant James Hall
With immense sadness and grief, the family of Grant J. Hall announces his unexpected passing on December 26, 2021 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his family by his side. Grant was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1956 to parents Thomas M. and Eileen Hall and he lived in various locations in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and England as a result of his father’s service with the Canadian Air Force.
Grant is lovingly remembered and survived by his wife Judy, daughters Katherine and Jennifer and their partners Dante Di Gregorio and Joe Newhouse respectively, mother Eileen, sister Peggy Murray, London, ON, nieces Julia Sammon, London UK and Suzanna Murray, London, ON and nephew Tom Murray, Toronto, ON. Grant is predeceased by his father Thomas (Mac) Hall. Grant and Judy began their life together in 1983 after meeting through a mutual friend and married in 1988.
Grant studied forestry at the University of Toronto and graduated with a B. Sc. in Forestry in 1981. He accepted a position as a production foreman with Great Lakes Forest Products – woodlands operations and settled in Thunder Bay. After several years in logging and forest management with GLFP, Grant embraced entrepreneurship with the formation of Huronian Timber and later a partnership in Superior Custom Trailers along with other small businesses. In 2010 he began a new chapter in the construction and renovation sector and firewood business. Recently, he started to transition into retirement.
Grant had a strong presence in the cross-country ski community as a skier, a member of the Board of Directors for the Lappe Nordic Ski Club and Lake Superior Nordic Association, and a passionate race organizer. He was committed to maintaining the ‘Lappe Standard’; the measure of quality assurance for cross-country ski races. During the 2020-2021 ski season he logged over 2,000 kilometres on the ski trails.
The family camp at Windigoostigwan Lake was his favourite place and home of many good times and memories with family and friends. Camp was both a labour of love and a place of relaxation and adventure. He loved to chat and share a laugh while sitting on the deck overlooking the lake. Each day finished off with a sauna, beer and a swim followed by a good meal.
Above all, Grant’s passion was for his family, radiating great pride in his daughters’ accomplishments and activities. He lived life large and will be remembered for his intellect, logic, passion for politics, outstanding work ethic, sincere interest in helping others and commitment to friendship. He will be in our hearts forever.
Our family thanks the good Samaritan skiers at Lappe Nordic, the Lappe Fire Department, Superior North EMS and the medical team at TBRHSC IMCU for their care and compassion extended to Grant.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when conditions for gathering improve. If friends so desire, memorial donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, the Regional Food Distribution Association or a charity of your choice will be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
