Gerard Cummings, affectionately known to many as “Gerry” was born July 4, 1925 at Spencerville, ON. He is the oldest son of William and Susan Cummings who have predeceased him but he has a remaining brother Ross Cummings who resides at Kemptville Retirement Home with his wife Joan.
Gerry had 2 children, a son, Wayne who predeceased him in November of 2007 and a daughter, Sharon on January 2019 as well as his wife Elizabeth (Betty) of 56 years who passed away in March of 2001. Gerry proudly adores his 3 grandchildren Shawn of Brockville, Kimberly of St. Albert, Alberta and Jason of Brockville. He also has 3 great grandchildren, Kiley, Devin and Kami who all live in the area. Gerry grew up in the Spencerville area, attended school and church there before he married Betty in 1945 and moved to Brockville, ON where he worked for Smith’s Dairy delivering milk by horse (Peg) and wagon. After that he spent one year at Tanners Garage in Prescott but then started working at Philips Cable in Brockville where he acquired his Millwright Certificate and remained there until his retirement in January 1988. Since his retirement Gerry never stopped working, he was always doing odd jobs around town doing everything from small engine repairs to whatever you needed fixed. Gerry then worked for awhile at Hewitt’s Welding in Brockville before going to work at Northern Cables later taking a year off when his wife Betty took ill but soon returned until his legs could no longer take the cement floors so he retired the second time around 2010. Gerry is definitely a people person making friends wherever he goes. Him and his wife travelled to the east coast a couple of times to visit relatives but loves travelling anywhere in eastern Ontario or wherever the urge would take him. During those travels he met a long time school mate Marion Paterson whom he loved spending time with. Marion later passed away in July 2016.
Before his son Wayne passed away Gerry took a trip with him in the transport to Ohio where they took in a Steam tractor show. Gerry and his son were very big into mechanics . One thing that always amazed him was the up and coming technology and how things had progress so fast. Gerry has no problem making friends and never liked to spend time alone so when he decided living alone was not for him anymore so he took up residence at Mayfield Retirement Home , Prescott in January 2018 where he met Vivian Riddell and soon became inseparable. Gerry has never missed his yearly visits to the Spencerville Fair until the Pandemic hit and then his health began to decline. Always sporting a smile even on his bad days, Gerry is an amazing person and can tell many stories about his life and people he has met over his 96 years of living in the area. We always joke that he is like a walking historian, he can tell you about people and dates as he has a very sharp mind and a loving personality. Gerry recently moved to Wellington House in Prescott where he spent his final days. We would like to Thank Many people for the great Care they had given him over the last few years. I wish I could list everyone but we would not be able to begin because there are so many. Gerry, in his 96 years on this earth, has made so many friends and to begin to count them would be astronomical. He was definitely one of a kind that can never be duplicated.
