Obituary of Gerald Silverman
SILVERMAN, DR. GERALD
March 9, 1941 – August 25, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Gerald Silverman, with his loving family by his side. Cherished husband of Dr. Andrea Silverman. Loving father to Dr. Brett Silverman (Dr. Hindy Silverman), Dr. Kirsten Mekelburg (Philip) and Meggin Rosner, all of Atlanta, Georgia, Justin Silverman (Dr. Sarah Silverman) of Portland, Oregon and Dr. Jonathan Silverman of Jackson, Tennessee. Beloved grandfather of seven. Survived by sister Nancy Young of Cherryhill, NJ. He will be dearly missed by his many extended relatives, colleagues and friends. Jerry had a cherished relationship with his dedicated staff which continued after his retirement in 2015. He was born in Springfield, MA and grew up in Washington, DC which allowed him to observe multiple historic events including hearing Dr. Martin Luther King deliver his famous, ‘I Have a Dream’ speech at the March on Washington and witnessing the funeral of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University and Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Following completion of his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1970 from the University of Illinois at Cook County Hospital in Chicago he received a fellowship at Westminster Hospital in London, England. While in England, he received notice that he had been drafted into the U.S. Air Force and was posted to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He had the opportunity to travel extensively in the capacity of Air Force Dental Officer which took him to Japan with Henry Kissinger, Secretary of State, aboard Air Force Two and to the Caribbean with General Westmoreland who was then Chief of Staff of the U.S. Military. He was also the Air Force Dental Officer to Foreign Military Officers at the blastoff of the Apollo 15 to the moon in Cape Canaveral in Florida. After his honourable discharge in 1973, Jerry was invited to join Dr. Bernie Lyons in private practice which brought him to Windsor, ON. He provided compassionate care for 42 years to so many patients, all of whom meant so much to him.
Jerry’s life long love of baseball started on the sandlots of Washington, D.C. and continued with his association with the Detroit Tigers. As a 50th birthday present to himself, he joined the Tigers for his first Fantasy Baseball Camp in Lakeland, Florida, a tradition which he continued for 9 more years.
He was honoured to receive many awards for his service to others over the years.
Jerry was a gentle, kind and loving man who will be missed by all those who ever had contact with him. He had impact on anyone who met him and will be missed by family and friends, but never forgotten. Our family is extremely grateful for the kind and loving care provided by the exceptional caregivers at Heron Terrace and Amy’s Helping Hands.
