George passed away peacefully, on Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday, May 2, 2021, at St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville, at the age of 81. He is predeceased by his parents Constantinos and Constandina (of Greece) and by his siblings Olymbia, Peter, Tom, Jimmy and Bill. George is survived by his dear sister Jeanne Kalivas (Brockville) and his brother Phillip Dariotis (Boston). Uncle George will be lovingly remembered and missed by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He had many close friendships that he cherished. His friends Jeff and Karen Baker were a great support to George over the years.
George was born in Granitseika, Greece on August 24, 1939 and came to Canada as a young man, embarking on a long and loved career in the restaurant business. His life’s work included owning/operating the Sunset Island Restaurant in the 1000 Islands, the Ground and Round and Olympic Restaurants in Brockville and the Tincap Restaurant. He also enjoyed his later years spending time at Jon’s Restaurant, visiting with his family there.
George loved life and quietly fought a brave, strong 16 year battle with cancer. He was grateful for the A.C.U. staff at the Brockville General Hospital and for the friendly care he received there. George always had a smile, stories, and cooking advice to share with those he met throughout his life. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, coffee with company, and he supported the Greek Orthodox Church faithfully, working quietly behind the scenes to do all that he could.
George’s family would like to thank the entire team at St. Lawrence Lodge for every kindness shown to George during his time there. A special thank you to Lisa Harper for your compassionate and supportive care. Memorial donations to the Greek Orthodox Church of Brockville, the Brockville General Hospital Foundation, and the St. Lawrence Lodge Foundation would be gratefully acknowledged. In George’s memory, consider being a blood donor if you are able.
In accordance with Covid protocols, a private service will be conducted at the Greek Orthodox Church, Perth Street, Brockville on Thursday, May 6, 2021 followed by interment at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Michel Bourjeily officiating.
