George Alexander MacKenzie 2021

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of George MacKenzie of Mira Gut on September 27, 2021, in the arms of his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay on June 28, 1939, George was the son of the late John and Clara (Edwards) MacKenzie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Judith (Martell); daughters, Sandra and her son, Mitchell of Richmond Hill, Sharon (Michael Legere) and their children, Breana, MacKenzie, Maxwell and Mason of Mira and Susan (Shaun Bussey)and their children, Caron, Oceanna, Addalynn and Alexander of Mira Gut; and his only son, David (Cheryl McCabe) and their son, Alex (Jess) all of North River.
George is also survived by his sisters, Catherine (George) Thurtell of Guelph and Clara of Mira Gut and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Donald Ewan; and his brother-in-law, Allister MacKenzie.
George was a dedicated Project Manager with an exemplary work record for over 30 years with the Ministry of Transport, which brought him to many places over the Maritimes – but his heart was always in Cape Breton, sitting on his veranda overlooking Mira Bay. He enjoyed many years of golfing, boating, camping and time at his second home in Indian Shores, Florida, where he open-heartedly welcomed many family and friends for over 30 years. George was an enthusiast for all things known as sports and a dedicated Braves and Habs fan. He was an avid reader, trivia expert and loved music, particularly the bagpipes.
George will always be remembered as a gentle and quiet soul who could liven up any social gathering with his infectious humour and witty one-liners. We love you Dad, and your humour lives on in all of us!
At George’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place with a private family burial at a later date.
We are forever grateful for the exemplary care George received at the Cove Guest Home, with special thanks to all staff from the Orchard Unit that supported us through Dad’s journey and going above and beyond for our Mom.
Memorial donations may be made to MacMillian Memorial United Church, The Cove Guest Home, Parkinson’s Foundation, or charity of one’s choice.
