Frank Bulka – Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Frank on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville with family by his side.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Steve Sr. and Rose Bulka; his brothers Joe and Steve Jr.; his father-in-law, Frank Halpape; his sisters-in-law, Margaret Bulka and Maria Bulka; his brothers-in-law, Marty Halpape and Herman Schultz.
Left to cherish Frank’s memory are: his loving wife of 48 years, Shirley; his son Wade (Susan) Jacobson and granddaughter Tristen (Rhett); his daughter, Tiffany Bulka and granddaughter Peyton; his daughter, Tara (Tyson) Lindal and grandchildren Dryden and Korsyn; his sisters, Mary Bentz, Anne Eggleston (Phil), Yolanda Schultz, Liz (Garry) Macza and his brother George (Dorothy) Bulka; his sisters-in-law, Valerie (Larry) Crawford, Gloria (Erwin) Nycholat, Lyla (Darryl) Tweidt), Jeanette Halpape, Ione (Vernon) Richards and Darla (Darrin) Brown and many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family.
Frank Paul Bulka was born on June 10, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lestock, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest son to the late Steve Sr. and Rose Bulka, and considered himself “special” because he was born on their anniversary. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Leross School for grades 1 to 8 and then Lestock School for grades 9-12.
Frank had many jobs, and when we say many, we mean it! After graduation, Frank worked on the family farm during the summers and away from home during the winters. His work experience ranged from working with the Department of Highways, Hard Rock Miner, driving Cat, crushing gravel, driving truck, working in the Oil Patch, and setting up and hauling equipment for Dysart Sales and Services. Once Frank and Joe took over the family farm in 1965, Frank then committed to farming full-time with his brother until they sold the farm in 1999, and Frank and his family then moved to Kelliher, Sk.
When Frank wasn’t working one of his many jobs, he found the time to meet the love of his life, Shirley Pauline (Halpape) Bulka in the winter of 1970. They were then married on December 21, 1973 in Regina, Sk. at the Justice of the Peace and then renewed their vows in front of family and friends at St. Mary Queen of All Hearts church in Lestock, Sk. shortly after. Frank and Shirley were blessed with 3 children and 4 grandchildren. He had a strong presence, that to many, may have seemed intimidating, but he had a gentle side. He was a kind and loving partner to Shirley as well as an amazing father and grandpa to his children and grandchildren.
He was a guy that loved to be busy, and loved to always lend a helping hand. When he claimed he retired from farming, he kept himself busy by making a U.S. custom harvest run, to Hail Adjusting with Sask. Municipal Hail, to working at Eskdale Seeds, to spending the spring and fall seasons working with Double L Farms and summers for Cattlemen John Martens and Darryl Clark. With all these jobs he took on over the years, he was a Jack of all Trades but a “Master of None!” He always claimed he was retired but we all felt he worked harder than he did when he was actually employed!
In his down time, he loved being outdoors whether it was hunting, fishing, crop checking, cutting his grass when it didn’t need to be cut or helping Shirley in her garden. Frank loved spending time with his family. There were countless meals and crib games at their place. He cherished every moment with his family especially his grandchildren. Whether it was attending their sporting events, taking them to the park, or teaching them how to fish. If he wasn’t spending time with his family, you could find him at the local coffee shop with his coffee crew or at an arena attending hockey games with his friends.
We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
The funeral service will be held at Kelliher School Gym on Saturday, October 30th, 2021 at 11:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kelliher Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund.
