Obituary
With profound sadness the family of Frances Katherine Carberry nee Halas announce her peaceful passing on April 3,2021 after a long and courageous struggle against Alzheimer’s Disease.
Fran has been predeceased by her parents Ray, Mary and Elinore Halas and her brother Ronald. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Tom and their children; Jamie Galbraith (James), Katie, Patrick and Quinn(Ben Courchene) along with four loving grandchildren, Brynn, Blake and Griffin Galbraith and Norah Courchene. She is also survived by her sisters Karen Klisko (Ken), Joannie Halas (Bob Campbell) and brother Joe (Deenie Lefko-Halas) along with many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her Bobsie twin and cousin Lynn Yetman and her favourite Uncle Jerry.
Fran was born December 10,1952 and attended St Joseph’s School on College until Grade 8, entering Garden City Collegiate in Grade 9. She met her high school sweetheart Tom during her high school years. It just took her until three years after high school to realize it!
Fran and Tom were very good friends until sometime in 1974 when they fell in love and married in May 1975.
Fran spent much of her adult life caring for children. She started her career working in the North Winnipeg Y Nursery school under the mentorship of her older sister Karen. Moving onto to the University of Winnipeg Day Care in the mid 1970’s she was an advocate for early years learning and entered the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. Certifying before her degree year so that her husband could attend University, she became the first kindergarten teacher at the newly opened Chancellor School in Waverly Heights.
By the time Tom was finishing University, Fran was expecting her first child and she embarked on a career using her early years learning skills raising her own children. This involved a move to Thompson and two more children.
After a move from Thompson to Dauphin in 1988 and the birth of a fourth child, Fran decided it was time to move back into the paid workforce and embarked on a career as an educational assistant. She supported many children during this period and it only was interrupted by her tragic accident in 1998 and subsequent retirement due to closed head trauma complications resulting in early onset Alzheimer’s in 2008.
Fran was supported at home until April 2014 when she entered St Paul’s Home in Dauphin. During her 7 years at St Paul’s, Fran has been supported by a caring and professional care team. There have been too many staff to mention here. They all know who they are and have a special place within our family. The family is forever grateful to the kind and compassionate care provided by this facility.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a private family service will take place at St Viator’s RC Church in Dauphin at 11:00 on April 10, 2021. Father Michel Nault officiating and Sneath Strilchuk in care of arrangements. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba, the Dauphin Community Foundation or a charity of your choosing. The family wishes to thank all of you for your support over the years. Fran will be missed but is at peace.
