The family of Frances M Kennedy (97), announces with great sadness her passing on July 15, 2021 at the Victoria General Hospital.
Frankie was born in 1924 in Manchester England, the second of six daughters born to Robert and Lucy Boardman. She was educated in Manchester until the beginning of World War II when she went to work in an aircraft factory. She met and married Canadian soldier Christopher Kennedy in 1945 and came to Canada as a War Bride to his home in Pleasant Hill, Port Hastings. Prior to her marriage, unbeknownst to Frankie, her dad all the way from Manchester, England was able to have her future family and community in Canada thoroughly ‘investigated’. Assured she would be supported and well cared for in her new home, he agreed with her decision to depart her home country. She always recounted with fondness the warmth and kindness she experienced from the time she arrived at Pier 21, continuing throughout the years that followed in Nova Scotia. Chris and Frankie settled in Port Hawkesbury where they had a wonderful life and raised a family of six children.
Frankie’s days were full looking after her large family but she also found time to pursue her passion for yoga beginning in the late 1960’s, long before the practice was ‘in vogue’. She traveled for workshops to Philadelphia and Nassau to perfect her technique. She was well known in the town for her expertise and willingness to help others who wanted to participate in the yoga classes she taught. She took great pride in the fact that she could still do poses and stretches into her late eighties.
Frankie moved to Halifax in 1999; in 2012 she went to live in Assisted Living at Parkland Clayton Park where she thrived and thoroughly enjoyed the last decade of her life.
The family extends tremendous thanks and gratitude to the staff at Bradford Hall and Evan Hall for the wonderful care and dedication to our mother. She stated numerous times over the years that Parkland was a wonderful place to live.
She was predeceased by her husband Christopher in 1989 and her son Peter in 1993; her parents, Robert and Lucy and her five sisters in England: Mary, Flo, Judy, Hilda, and Margot.
She is survived by her children, Patricia (Blago) Crnogorac, Edmonton; Michael (Joan) Kennedy, Port Hastings; Graham(Lana) Kennedy, Red Deer; Eric (Helen) Kennedy, Halifax; Marcia (Jerry) Kohler, Halifax; her grandchildren Peter Crnogorac, Katrina Crnogorac, Gillian (Kennedy) Packer, Mark Kennedy, Evan Kennedy, Erin Kennedy, Leah Kennedy, Rachel Kohler, Sam Kohler; and her three great grandchildren, Ethan Packer, Kian Packer and Nathan Kennedy; brother-in-law Alan Donnelly, Manchester England; and nieces and nephews all over the world.
A special thank you to the medical professionals at the Halifax Infirmary and the Victoria General where Frankie spent her last days. Your compassion and care will never be forgotten.
A private family graveside burial will take place at St. David’s cemetery, Port Hastings and a memorial event will be held when Covid restrictions are lifted.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Frankie may be made to St. David’s Cemetery, Port Hastings or to a charity of your choice. Condolences or inquiries may be directed to Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury: www.greensfuneralhome.ca
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little-but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me-but let me go
For this is a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone.
It’s all part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me but let me go
