Filomena Rizzi
Filomena passed away peacefully and without pain, at home surrounded by her children, on April 26, 2021 at the youthful and spry age of 95, an age she made look easy and worth aspiring to. Up until illness and then cancer took over her body a few short months ago, she was very independent and able to care for herself. She walked without any assistance and climbed two flights of stairs daily. She was full of life. She made everyone feel welcome and she always had some of her homemade baked treats on hand. She loved to bake and had a reputation for her amazing baking skills. She loved to play scoba and in the past few months while her children spent time caring for her at home, many hours were spent playing scoba. Filomena was born in Santa Lucia, Italy on July 5, 1925 but as a young single woman she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. Luigi followed and they were soon married. While living in Edinburgh, she developed a love for tea and learned to speak English. Searching for a better life, Luigi moved to Canada. Filomena exhibited her strength, courage and independence when she soon followed with two young daughters in tow. She worked at St. Joseph’s Convent and at St. Bernards Convalescent Hospital where she was loved by the nuns. She would speak so fondly of her time working there. In her later years, she loved going to Casino Rama and playing the penny slots. She was predeceased by her late husband, Luigi. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Nora (Ralph), Franca (Richard) and son, Enzo (Tammy) and her grandchildren, Mark (Lisa), Daniel (Christina), Tony (Vanessa) , Katie (Steve) and Travis (Jaime) and her great grandchildren, Matteo, Olivia, Mia, Celine, Harper and Livy. Donations can be made to the Canadian cancer society.
