Eva Rottenbucher Tuesday August 17th 2021

Eva (Udwar) Rottenbucher (Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma) was born in Gasinci, Yugoslavia on April 29, 1935. She resided in the area with her family, until the war forced them to move to Wels, Austria when she was 11 years old. At that young age, Eva met Adam, her future groom, 4 years her senior. On May 31, 1952 they were married in Wels. A year later they set sail for their greatest adventure, a life together in Canada. On May 10, 1953, after a 10 day journey, they landed in Halifax harbour and continued their journey to Lethbridge. During their 2 years in Alberta, Eva worked on a sugar beet farm and a Chinese food restaurant. After which they travelled by train to Regina, where they were later reunited with their parents and siblings who had journeyed from overseas. Adam and Eva built a home and started their family together. In the early 60’s Eva and Adam settled at their paradise outside Bjorkdale.
Eva loved the farm, especially once the running water and power was established. She loved the endless space to tend to her vegetable and flower gardens. Family, friends and neighbours were always welcomed on the farm leaving the yard busy with visitors, as excited to be there as she was to have them. This was all in addition to the countless hours spent working in the field and with various animals. With the help of her mom, fondly known as Oma, who lived on the farm with them, she learnt many cooking and baking skills that we all love today. Over the years, you could count on seeing Eva’s smiling face delivering harvest meals and coffee breaks to the fields. She would then unwind with the short dirt road drive to the lake to watch the kids swim, have a fish fry, cast a line in the lake and sit on the dock while watching the sun set.
Coffee time was a necessity, gathering to share her delicious baking was scheduled, twice daily, if you were late, not to worry, the baking was endless, only 1 freezer away and the kettle rarely cooled, coffee time could happen in an “instant”, literally.
Sundays were a favourite day for Eva, she started off dressed for church, only to return home and begin Sunday soup, a favourite meal her entire family can agree on, but no one can decide which was the best, ranging from dumplings, rivelies, fleckle, dill or chicken noodle. There was never a shortage of food and care packages were insisted on never leaving you empty handed.
Eva was a committed member of the Bjorkdale community, she loved her time within the community and made many of her beloved friendships here. Participating in Wildlife Federation suppers and picnics, Catholic Women’s League, Curling Club member and community dancer and card party hostess.
Eva’s greatest treasure was her family. She could easily rattle off the stats; 4 children, 11 Grandchildren and as many great grandchildren as currently stood, today 17, she was also excited in knowing there were more on the way. Her love for them shone through in many ways, a house plastered in photos, a never missed birthday or anniversary card, phone calls, bragging about accomplishments and always their favourite menu on farm visits.
Eva lived a life full of love, leaving a lasting impression on us all. She passed away peacefully at the age of 86, and has now happily rejoined Adam, her groom of 68 years. We all forever remember the infamous wave goodbye out the kitchen window. Here is to our one final goodbye wave!
