Drifted peacefully to eternal life on October 27, 2021 after 89 saw-dust filled years, Eugene (Gene) Maloney of Bay Bulls. Gene was tough as nails, no nonsense, kind-hearted, loving, generous, funny, and fun loving. He was the keeper of our collective history, a boat builder beyond compare, a storyteller with a memory that would shame The Rooms, and an extraordinary husband, father, father in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, and uncle.
Leaving a lifetime of memories for his wife of 60 years Regis, his children Ken (Sheila Aspell), Clara (Howard Guy), Jamie (Tina Dinn), Wayne and Guy. Grandson Dr. Brent Guy (Stephanie), step grandson BJ Feehan (Fahlon Drake), Chris Feehan (Kelly Langthorne), great grand daughter Adelaide Guy, great step sons Oscar and Harry Feehan Langthorne. His brother Maxwell (Madonna), sisters Alma Power and Maureen Kennedy.
Special thank you to Dr. Rod McCarthy, Dr. B. Doulton and Nurse Nicole Power Sharpe.
Gene celebrated his 13 birthday in a skiff off North Head….and every other birthday until the moratorium. Gene had many fishing mates throughout his career, but none longer than Ray Glynn. Gene and Ray fished together for many years and got each other out of many jams, including a trip overboard.
Hard work never killed anyone, and that ethos did not end with the moratorium. Gene began building boats with gusto, crafting 72 in his time, a wheelbarrow for his best little wood carrier, countless swings, birdhouses, chairs, and tables that grace the patios and front yards across the province.
Aside from his wildly talented children, Gene’s greatest gift to this world was his love of our history – all of our moments big and small. On every day, other than his last, Gene asked about the weather and recorded it on the wall of his shed. However, more important than collecting our history, he readily shared it. Most recently, Gene shared his experience of the moratorium with artist Jennifer Thornhill Verma. The Northside of Bay Bulls held all the bent nails and twisted logs that Gene ever needed, but his stories have made it all the way around the world through the video YouTube link, youtu.be/TeHGiOXUXoU .
We will all miss Gene’s stories in the shed, quick wit and turn of phrase, but we will forever have and hold dear the fondest of memories.
