Obituary of Elsie Barkman
Elsie Baerg Barkman was born to John L and Margaret Wiebe Baerg on August 3, 1931. She passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, during a beautiful sunset the evening of January 10, 2021 at Westview Care Community.
Mom received her education at the Antler School, riding there on horseback together with her siblings. In her younger years she helped with the milking and other chores on her parent’s farm. Her father was her hero and her mother a quiet and gentle teacher. On December 20, 1943 Mom was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. Her faith was precious to her. She lived a victorious Christian life but was willing to admit her failures and we are looking forward to meeting Mom in heaven. Mom and Aunt Sophie took Registered Nurse’s Aide training together, in the 1950’s. Her nursing skills and quiet concern would bring her to our bedside when we were sick. She spent many years graciously caring for her parents and sisters. We enjoyed her nursing stories from her work days in Calgary and Three Hills. Many people benefitted from the gift of helps she exhibited, including many pots of soup for the needy. Mom married Dad, Allan Barkman, on July 10, 1960 sharing over sixty years together. Mom taught us to honour our Dad which in turn taught us to respect God.
Mom enjoyed the out-of-doors and went on many walks till her last day. Flower and vegetable gardens flourished under her care and the extra produce was given away. After meals she would wash the dishes while we sang the pretty songs she suggested loving the songs sung in soft harmony. Mom especially enjoyed her grandchildren’s singing. Her wish and prayer was that all her children and grandchildren would serve God. She loved her great grandchildren and created a bond with them.
Those left with fond memories are her husband Allan and family; Jeff & Elaine, Ashley & Jake Klassen and family, Vanessa & Nick Litwiller, Colin; Burt & Cindy, Jordon and Anthony; Margaret; Gerald & Cecile, Trevor, Tamra, and Taylor; and Doris & Roy Toews, Brian & Donna and family, Reg & Janelle and family, Evan & Doris and family, Jay & Carlene and family, and Kyle & Shannon and family; in-laws; Marie Baerg, Bernice Baerg, Doris Barkman, Nellie Barkman, Peter & Rose Dueck and many nieces and nephews.
We wish to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Westview Care Community and the Red Deer Regional Hospital for the excellent care Mom received. The many visits, phone calls and messages from friends and family have been appreciated.
