Obituary
It is with great sadness, the Lewis family announces the very peaceful passing of Elizabeth M. Lewis (nee Whelan), age 90, surrounded by her loving family at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on April 7th, 2021.
Predeceased by husband Timothy Lewis, parents Mary Alice and Michael Whelan, brothers, sister and in-laws George Whelan, John and Theresa Whelan, Madonna and Aiden Critch, son-in-law Clarence Butt and special friends Michael Moriarity and Rita Hickey.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her sons: Michael (Pam), John, Stanley (Gillian) and Gary (Cathy), daughters: Rosemary and Rolayne (Joe), 14 grandchildren (and partners): Lindsey, Meghan and Jake Bartlett; William, Chelsea, Shane and Christopher Butt; Rick and Rhonda Hayes; Jason, Anthony, Joshua and Victoria Lewis; and Corey Lewis (Erin); 11 great-grandchildren, special furry companion Fluffy, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Mother was both a gentle soul and a force to be reckoned with – she was the heartbeat of our family, and dearly loved her grand and great-grandchildren, leaving us with so many wonderful memories. Originally from Colliers, she left her teaching career to raise her family, moving to Labrador City and eventually residing on Salmonier Line, Holyrood. She always supported the community, volunteering at the Grenfell Hospital, with the Girl Guides of Canada, as President of the Catholic Women’s League in Labrador City and as a member of the Star of the Sea and Executive of the Marina Golden Age 50 Plus Club in Holyrood, to name a few. Her beloved Singer sewing machine which she purchased from her first paycheck, kept pace with her until just last year, churning out many quilts, dresses or costumes. She dearly loved music and could play many a tune on her piano until crippled with arthritis; she loved to dance ‘close to the floor’ on Newfie Nites and have a laugh with her many friends. With interests too numerous to mention, she had a zest for life and was always ready to take on a new adventure, including finally exploring the Labrador coastline while in her eighties.
Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Public visitation in keeping with COVID-19 Restrictions will take place on Friday, April 9th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The funeral service will be private and by invitation only due to Covid-19 Restrictions. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at 10:30 am from Holy Cross Church, Holyrood with cremation to follow.
