Obituary for Elizabeth Katherine Ternes
April 23, 1952 – May 16, 2021
On May 16th, 2021, a bright light went out in North Vancouver with the passing of Elizabeth (Betty/Liz) Katherine Ternes. She was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, to parents John and Kate Wasko, but spent her childhood growing up in Ephrata, Washington State.
Betty and her lifelong friend, Penny Knutzen, came to Vancouver on vacation as young women, where she had a chance encounter at Safeway with Robert (Bob) Ternes. She immediately realized she had met the love of her life, and it wasn’t long before she moved to Vancouver to be with him. They were married and settled in North Vancouver, a place they called home for many years. Together, they treated people the same, no matter who they were or what their circumstances. Family, friends and strangers were always made to feel welcome. They both also loved animals, rescuing many dogs and cats through the years, who became part of their family.
Liz was a loving wife, a true friend, and a loyal employee. She worked the last 20 years with Dr. Mohammed Shokravi, where she made patients feel welcomed. Many later became her friends. Liz had the gift for gab and you could always find her with a smile or a laugh no matter what life or circumstances threw at her.
Liz was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Robert (Bob) Ternes in 2020. She is survived by 2 brothers, Paul and his wife Betty (Susie), and Matthew (Sean and Shane), sister-in-law Valerie Taylor (Paul), and many longtime friends, including Penny Knutzen, Julie Bowman, and Peggy Joudrey. For those who knew her, she will leave a void, and will always be remembered lovingly by them with a smile.
Special thanks goes to Jacques and Marie Guillard, who were wonderful neighbours for many years, Dr. Isabelle Hughen, and the staff at the North Shore Hospice in North Vancouver, BC.
Memorial Donations
In honour of Liz, donations may be made to the North Shore Hospice (Lions Gate Hospital Foundation), to an animal support agency, or (as Liz loved to hike the local mountains) to the North Shore Rescue.
