Obituary of Eleanor Louise McMillan
Eleanor Louise McMillan (Nora) was born August 28, 1925 in Hamilton and passed away peacefully on December 20th 2021 at Southbrook Lodge, Brampton, in her 97th year. Loving wife of Joe (2004), Mum to Mike (Brenda), Sandra (Rod), the late Lynn (2018) and John. Cherished Gram to Heather (Lyndon), Jennifer (Justin); Laura (Jason), Eric; proud Great Grandma of Amelia, Ian, Estelle, Mabel, Walter, Scarlette, Leo, and her namesake, Eleanor.
Shortly after WW2 she married Joe and worked as a secretary at Westdale High School in Hamilton. Then, as her children came along, she became a fulltime homemaker. Nora moved the family several times as Joe was transferred across the country—to Port Credit, Winnipeg, and back to Mississauga.
She was an active volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, winning honours for driving patients to Princess Margaret Hospital for many years. She regularly volunteered at her various churches. As a rug hooker, she was a key person in the rug hooking guild.
In addition to rug hooking she was an avid knitter right up to her later years, with each family member having a knitted memento from her. Nora was an outdoor enthusiast, hiking the Bruce Trail, cross country skiing, water skiing and swimming at Red Bay.
Her heart was always at Red Bay where she enjoyed her family and friends for 96 years. She even went for a swim in Lake Huron this past summer!
Nora spent the last 20 years at Southbrook Lodge, participating in all of the activities there for as long as she could. We want to thank the caring staff at Southbrook for the attention they gave to Mum.
The family will be hosting a visitation at the Rices at 75 Charles Street, Georgetown on Wednesday December 29 from 7 to 9 pm to remember Nora. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date in Red Bay, Ontario. Mum, you are loved.
