At 89 years old, after a long and well lived life, filled with love, laughter, adventure and few regrets, Ed died peacefully and gently at Innisfree House hospice October 7, 2021.
Left with wonderful memories are his wife Susan and his greatest legacy, his children, Lori (Dave) Burgoyne, Greg (Janet) Herringer, Peter Herringer, Amy (Paul) Joliat, Jennifer (Dave) Johnston and Blain Herringer.
His grandsons Cole and Reid Joliat, Michael and William Johnston, who were sure their Grandpa could fix anything, were the lights of his life.
He is also remembered by Susan’s family, Margaret Blain, Jim (Debby) Blain, David (Pat) Blain, Donald (Madelaine) Blain and their families.
Ed was a proud Waterloo boy, growing up on Alexandra Street in the home his grandparents built. He was predeceased by his parents, Jerome and Clairbel (Schmuck), his brother Gerald and his beloved Aunt Nelle Schmuck. He is survived by his brother Gregory.
A carpenter by trade, Ed was also our artist, architect, designer and engineer.
He started his career building homes in Waterloo. He then spent several years finishing the interior of Zehrs stores. In the early 70’s Ed started his own business, Out of the Woods, building parade floats for the Oktoberfest parade. For the next 25 years, he was in his element and his successful business expanded to other parts of Canada.
He built our family homes and created unique furniture pieces for each one.
In retirement, Ed repaired, renovated and created furniture pieces for his children’s homes. When his grandchildren arrived, there was no stopping him. His grandsons had a treehouse complete with a drawbridge, props and storage for the handmade weapons arsenal created by their Grandpa. Many happy hours were spent up and down the hill at the lake as battles were fought and imaginations flourished.
Each time we gather as a family around the dining table Ed created for us, we will remember the adventures, the love and laughter we shared together. His love for us and our memories will get us through the difficult times.
Ed loved the line in the song Morningside –  » and all the children gathered around the table, filled it with their laughter – and that was good. »
His life was truly lived for his children and it was a good life.
