Matthews, Edward Joseph, 84 of Grand Anse, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2021, at home with his daughters by his side. Born in Grand Anse, he was the son of the late John Dougald & Mary Irene (Marchand) Matthews.
Eddie attended school in Grand Anse until the age of 14, when he decided to quit to help his father cut pulp and look after the family farm. Coming from a large family, there was a lot of hard work to be done and he stepped up to the plate. He did it with no regrets and much love for his parents and siblings. He continued to work the family farm until his mid 70’s.
Eddie was known for his huge heart, giving to anyone who stopped in for a visit. His beautiful vegetable gardens were admired by many and provided many garden stews in the area. He gave to others with his heart. Never looking for anything in return.
He was a book of knowledge. Always reading. Whether it was the family Doctor book or the bible, he read with interest, which made him a very wise man. We didn’t have to attend church to hear the word of the Lord. He preached the bible to us all and it didn’t need to be on a Sunday. He knew the bible from cover to cover and believed in the word of the lord and living an honest life.
He also enjoyed watching the news, old movies and doing word puzzles. Very seldom did he get one wrong.
Making up songs and playing his guitar was one of his many passions. Hank Williams Sr. was his favorite singer and enjoyed listening to Daryl MacLean’s Country Gold show on Sundays. He always said that the old country songs told a story of times past.
Eddie was a second to none father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved everyone equally and worried about us all. He was a simple man and lived a honest, hard working life. Never taking anything for granted.
He leaves behind six daughters, Norna (Cyril), Susie (Mike), Donna (Gary), Angela (Wayland), all of Grand Anse; Arlene (Leo), Petit DeGrat; and Rachel (Carl) of Dawson Creek, BC.; 10 Grand children, Edward, Jason, Donnie, Chasity, Nakita, Lee, Ashton, Nathan, Kaden and Matthews; 2 Great Granddaughters, Rianna and Ella. Step children, Lillian Portrusching, Halifax; Robie MacDonald, Grand Anse; Carolyn MacRae, Dundee; and Dianne MacDonald, Halifax.
He is also survived by brothers, Carl (Rose), James, both of Grand Anse; Alexander (Rose), Petit DeGrat; sisters Edna Cogswell, Evanston, Suzanne Dorey (Velma) MacIntyre’s Lake; and Jean Marie Linthorne of Stellarton.
He was predeceased by his spouse, Ronola MacDonald, granddaughter Chantel, step daughter Beverly Laundrie, step son Donald MacDonald; brothers, Charlie, Wallace, George, Mattie, John, Thomas, Arthur and Hubert; sisters, Florence, Loretta, Rose and Cassie Jean.
A special thank you to our family doctor, Dr. Laurie MacNeil and continuing care nurses Sarah Touesnard, Cathy MacDougall and Leaha Burns. They were always there to answer any questions and all provided excellent care to our father.
