Edward Joseph Lake, R.N
February 03, 1946 – October 04, 2021
Ed passed away at the age of 75 at the Health Science Centre in St. John’s after a long illness. He was predeceased by his loving daughter Maureen in 2004; mother Sarah O’Keefe and grandmother Bridget Cunningham. He leaves to mourn his wife of 53 years Elaine (nee Holden); his children Anita (Dave Martin), Michael (Mary Coll-Black), Gordon (Taniamarie Nylund) and five precious grandchildren.
Also mourning his loss are his step-father Clem O’Keefe and siblings Clem Jr. Hughie, Gerard, Leonard, Nick, Terry, David, Ellen, Sarah, Fran, Bob, Randy, Jim, Joe and their families. Ed was also close to his in-laws Brendan (Trudy), Francis, Catherine (Bill), Ita (Ben – deceased 2013), Gordon (deceased 2021, Zita), Gus (Isabel), Elizabeth (Jim) and their families.
After graduating from St. Clare’s School of Nursing in 1977, Ed had a long career as a registered nurse beginning in the Emergency Room and advancing to nursing supervisor and manager of various departments at St. Clare’s Hospital. He later worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Nain and other costal Labrador communities. In retirement he was an avid researcher and writer, with published works including Capturing An Era: History of the Newfoundland Cottage Hospital System. He considered his best accomplishments to be his four children and five grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be at a later date. No visitation. Funeral Mass will be at St. Teresa’s Church on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions those wishing to attend the mass must register with the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to World Vision or the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Teresa’s.
