We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Dr. Michael Falk on September 17, 2021.
Michael passed away, at the age of 74, in the arms of his beloved wife Gerry, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dr. Geraldine Anne Falk, who was the love of his life.
Michael is also survived by his loving family, John and Dianne O’Reilley, niece Angela (Riley and Camrynn), nephew Aaron (Jake and Cain), as well as his chosen son, Dr. Larry Payne. Additionally, he is survived by a sister Rosemary Falk in Virginia, USA and two nieces, Josee and Lisa Bellefeuille of Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Michael graduated with a Ph.D in chemistry in 1974 and had a distinguished career working 7 years as a researcher at the University of Alberta in the Chemistry Department. He earned several awards for his brilliant work in chemistry.
Michael then began his career with Edmonton Public Schools as the first International Baccalaureate teacher in physics and chemistry. He was appointed as Department Head in Chemistry and was a school administrator at Harry Ainlay High School. He spent the majority of his career working in senior administration as Director of Student Information as an expert in data management. Michael co-authored a chemistry textbook utilized in classrooms throughout the province and also established a private consulting company.
Michael was a kind, generous, gracious man. He volunteered for many years at the Wellspring Cancer Support Center. Michael was extremely well read, loved the game of golf, was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed classical music. He was also fluent in French and was studying Spanish. We admired Michael’s courage, dignity and graciousness. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The funeral will be held at All Saints’ Cathedral on Saturday, September 25th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Due to Covid restrictions, seating capacity is limited to 50 people.
