Cummins, Dr. James (Jim) Thomas:
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. James Thomas Cummins, in his ninety-first year. Devoted spouse of Helen, whom he loved and adored for 62 years, and loving father to Dr. Michelle (Dale), Dr. Helene, Michael (Shannon) and Bernard (Tanya). Proud Pops to Alexandra, Hilary, and Nolan. James was born in Wingham, Ontario, predeceased by his parents Michael and Irene Cummins. He is survived by his sister, Mary-Ellen Lahn.
James and Helen moved to Galt in 1965 with their two young daughters to establish his practice in dentistry. Dr Cummins retired at the age of 80 after 46 years of dedicated dental care. Dr. Cummins was well known for his penultimate gentle touch and the tender care he rendered his patients. Indeed, his 1965 U of T yearbook noted that, « with his natural warmth and charm he will rapidly become a very popular practitioner ». Dad also cared deeply about education. After being appointed to fill a vacancy on the Waterloo Region Separate School Board, he ran for election to serve as a trustee, and was re-elected for almost two decades. His family fondly remembers many election campaigns covering Cambridge to get out the vote for Dad. He was proud of his service and his only goal was to advance the educational outcomes for students in the Region. As a father, Dad was calm and caring and always a true gentleman. His greatest joy was family, particularly if it involved an element of travel. James was a loyal parishioner at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, having attended with his young family since its inception. He had a lasting and profound impact on our lives.
The family is grateful for the care provided at St. Mary’s Hospital, and in particular Drs Claire Harlick and Leigh Day.
James’ family will receive relatives and friends from 4:45 – 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, 10 St. Gregory’s Drive, Cambridge, followed by a reception at the Galt Country Club, 750 Coronation Blvd, Cambridge. Those wishing to attend his visitation and funeral Mass please RSVP through the funeral home website.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
