Obituary
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Douglas Third ( Feb 21, 1928 to June 29, 2021), of Sechelt, BC.
Doug spent his youth in Lynn Valley and as a young man became a member of the Merchant Navy, travelling the world as a journeyman in the boiler room aboard merchant ships. This experience led to a long career as a mechanical engineer. He had a great love of theatre and performed regularly in musicals in White Rock and Medicine Hat. Doug devoted his retirement to volunteering around Sechelt – singing weekly at Totem Lodge and Shorncliffe, delivering Meals on Wheels as well as running both the Sechelt Food Band and the senior’s volunteer library. His devotion and support of his community did not go unnoticed and on December 12, 1996 Doug was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, an award recognizing the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. The award is given to those who “ embody the caring country Canadians aspire to build”.
Doug will be missed by his children Pamela, Linda (Derek), Shirley (Kevin), Jeff and Janice (David) and all those in Sechelt who still remember his beautiful tenor singing voice and his wonderful sense of humour.
Special thanks to his home care workers, Veteran’s Affairs, Meals on Wheels and Dr. Wildgrubbe for all their support over the past couple of years.
