It is with immense sorrow that the family of Douglas Albert Romkey, 75 of Hammonds Plains, announces his passing on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the QE II VG Site, Halifax.
Born in Bridgewater, Doug was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Robar) Romkey.
Doug started his earlier working career with Industrial Engineering, followed by being part-owner of R&M Safety Sales Ltd. He then went to work on the oil rigs, first with Weatherford Oil and Tool, as well as Rig Services Ltd., retiring in the early 90s.
An avid sportsman, Doug played hockey for many years with the R&M Safety and Green Gables Oldtimers in Bedford. He coached minor hockey and helped both his son and daughter learn the craft of being a goalie. Doug had a passion for music and spent a number of his early years playing bass for “The Centurians.” Doug was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Bedford Branch and enjoyed spending time at home with family. He will be remembered by many as a “jack of all trades,” who could fix pretty much anything.
Doug is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Tara Romkey of Bridgewater, and son, Kurt (Ginnette) Romkey, Pickens, South Carolina; grandchildren, Willem and Irelyn (Kate); sister, Janet (Doug) MacDonald, Halifax; in-laws John (Louise) Leary, (the late)Ron (Helen) Leary, David (Diane) Leary, Jane (Tony) Chick; four nieces and seven nephews.
Doug was a warrior, who showed bravery and perseverance throughout his many health battles. He taught anyone who had the privilege of knowing him how to face the toughest of situations with grace, determination, and grit. We are very appreciative of the care provided over the years from Dr. Ron Killeen, and many health care staff throughout the QEII system.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg from where a service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Shepherd’s Hill Cemetery, Riverport.
Proof of Covid-19 vaccination and masking will be required for those attending the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
