Dorothy Wilkinson
1929-2021
On Oct. 8, 2021 at age 92 Dorothy Wilkinson passed away peacefully with family by her side.
Dorothy was born in Belfast, N. Ireland July 27, 1929. She married budding photographer Richard Wilkinson on Boxing Day 1947. Son Brian was born in 1950. They immigrated to Canada in 1952, living for a brief time in North Battleford, then Meadow Lake where daughter Brenda was born in 1954. Saskatoon became home in 1957 where they managed and later bought Thams Photographers. In 1978 they sold the business and moved to Red Deer to try something different. Missing their friends in Saskatoon and after 3 years operating Prime Time Pizza, they returned “home” where they worked for Frontier Photographers and then McMaster’s Photographers until they retired. Richard passed away at home in 2011. Dorothy had nursed him with love and tenderness every day during his long decline.
Dorothy is predeceased by parents, Hugh & Cissie Burns, brother Hughie, Grandson Mark Wilkinson & lifelong friends Shirley Christian, Agness Olson, Inez Early, Gertie Blouin, Audrey Lloyd & Marg Corlette. She is survived by: son Brian (Christine); Brian’s son Damian (Miriam) Wilkinson (kids Rowan & Nieve); daughter Brenda (Don) Kardash, their daughter Maygen (Tyler Dunn) Kardash (kids Petra & Paris) and their son S.J. (Nicole Romanoff). Dorothy also leaves to mourn her much beloved younger brother, Ossie (Maureen) Burns & their family in Belfast, N. Ireland.
Dorothy was a sweet dear lady, always polite, courteous and sensitive to the needs of everyone she knew and met. She made friends everywhere she worked and lived, always caring for their welfare and never losing touch. She worked very hard and always strived to do things right – there were no half-measures. Her home was filled with the cherished and perfectly arranged wee treasures she had collected over the years. When it came to family Dorothy was the epitome of love, devotion and pride. She looked forward to the family’s regular Sunday suppers and the daily calls she received from both Brenda and Brian. For the past 4 years, Dorothy resided at Preston Park II. She truly loved living there and the staff treated her like a Queen. Thank you to all those good people, as well as the hardworking health care professionals at RUH whom endeavored to make Dorothy’s last days as comfortable as possible.
Dorothy’s ashes will be interred with Richard’s in the Columbarium at St John’s Cathedral. Ever the romantic, she asked Brenda to reserve some of their ashes to scatter by the River Lagan in Belfast where she and Richard held hands and walked during their courtship.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life with Reverend Margaret McKechney presiding, will be held Tuesday November 16, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue N.
If you wish to commemorate Dorothy’s life, please carry out a good deed or act of charity in her memory.
Note: Guests are required to be masked and fully vaccinated.
