Dorothy Cavanaugh 1938 – 2021
It is with heavy hearts and the fondest of memories that we announce the passing of Dorothy Cavanaugh: mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. She died on November 24, 2021 in Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater, BC at the age of 83. She leaves behind husband Bernard, daughters Deborah and Patricia (Mike), and sons Stewart (Deb), Douglas (Kim), Richard, and Mark (Heather), and her remaining sibling, her sister Jean (Herb). She will also be missed by her ten grandchildren: Dustin, Kyle (Tiffany), Kassandra (Anthony), Myles, Dalton, Drake, Karlee, Jerrod, Holly, and Justin; and three great grandchildren: Bentley, Lincoln and Serene.
Born in 1938 in Cereal, Alberta as one of six, Dorothy lived in Alberta and Ontario but predominantly in beautiful British Columbia. She served in the Air Force for 2 years and later worked in a multiple of jobs such as a special needs caregiver.
Dorothy was a take-no-nonsense sort of person with a heart of gold. Aside from her love of family, she would go the distance for animals — cats, dogs, skunks, horses – any creature that needed someone to fight for them. All her family can relate different stories of animal rescues such as the time she crawled under a burning trailer to rescue a cat, or when she went toe to toe with a burly truck driver of a cattle car, insisting the cattle be watered on a hot day whether or not they were headed to the abattoir. She won, by the way.
Dorothy was also a fearless traveller, motoring with her husband coast to coast across Canada almost every year. She loved to camp, especially when big groups of family assembled from far and wide. She could make a meal for 3 or 30 without breaking a sweat, rain or shine, under leaky tarps, or in the RV kitchen. And if she wasn’t shouting after frisky dogs, or running children, she would be reading. Dorothy enjoyed her reading.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
Memorial donations may be made to the BC SPCA (spca.bc.ca/) or to the Dr Helmcken Memorial Hospital (640 Park Drive, RR#1 Clearwater BC V0E 1N0).
