Doris Guenette: A Lady of Fierce and Tender Talent. As a child, Doris homesteaded with her parents in a log cabin near Big River, SK. A move to Edmonton, AB led to schooling, yes, but also impoverishment during the Depression. After Doris’ 1st marriage, she met the Love of her Life. Her sons, Jeff, Daryl and Robin Wilson and daughter, Twyla-Rae, ‘gave their Mom away’ to Louie Guenette in October 1966; daughter/sister Vallee-Lou completed the family the next July. During 60 years in their comfortable Sherwood Park homes, Doris strove to raise good kids (her own plus many foster children) and to perfect ‘domesticity’, but also believed: If YOU don’t live YOUR Life, who will? Doris’ reputation was well-earned. Classy. Beautiful. Gritty. Gutsy. Hard-working. She sang and played guitar/piano (with Louie on his fiddle) and
— Oh! — they danced! Her artistic creativity and ingenuity knew no bounds — nor did her courage to ‘try things’. She baked, sewed/quilted, crafted (from millinery to leather work/beading to wood carving), fished and hunted (with rifle and bow), traveled with Louie (western Canada, the ‘Old Country’, Australia and Alaska) and, always, lived for playing cards. As matriarch, Doris was predeceased by her Hubby, Louie; her parents, Forrest Hardy and Mary (nee Millikin); her younger siblings, Forrest, Gordon and Marilyn (Smith); her grandson, Christopher and many extended family members. Always ‘on her own terms’, Mom refused extreme measures and ended her brief ‘tango’ with Covid-19. We, her children, are grateful for the mid-night cellphone ‘goodbye’. Anticipating Louie’s voice again, with peaceful determination, she ‘headed off beyond the Pink Clouds’ where Dad, in his suit and soft shoes, promised he’d wait.
