With heavy hearts but beautiful memories, the family of Dolores Jean Coss announces her passing on December 14, 2021, at The Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, British Columbia, at the age of 82. Her family was by her side.
Dolores (aka McGee) was born April 12, 1939, in Blind River, Ontario. She grew up in a ‘firm but fair’ household, learning quickly the value of a strong work ethic. McGee instilled that ethic to her kids, as evidenced by the endless chores common at a time when child labor was paid the extortionate amount of ONE dollar… immediately spent on a bag of penny candy.
Known for her cheeky sense of humor and an endearing laugh, she gave the gift of laughter to her children. That oh-so coveted, loud, hyena-like ‘hee-haw’ that we all feel blessed to have…NOT. At family get-togethers (some were in public, sorry folks), you’d think you were listening to an episode of ‘Wild Kingdom.’
She was never one to mince words and would tell you like it is. Direct and forthright, spinning that conversation (that never happened) by saying, “And I said this… and then I said that…” A standing joke amongst us kids.
McGee became the Belle of the Bingo Hall and despite her penchant for winning, was adored for her thoughtful heart. She loved to call “Bingo” and crow about her wins, giggling fiendishly. She was a one-armed bandit with a single purpose; robbing the casino for as much money as her pension check would allow.
She loved spending time with her family and was a great multi-tasker. Scratching lottery tickets, drinking a beer, humming that repetitive; “Hm, hmm, hmmm” over and over… and over; all the while pretending to listen with the occasional “WHAAAT?” thrown in. Aaah, those were the best of times.
Mom was kind to a fault and easygoing. She would give you anything and everything she had, then not answer her phone for days thinking you had stolen it. She’d always call afterward, apologizing profusely, saying, “By the way, I need smokes.”
Mom was the soul of our family. Her beauty was that she was not just a mom but a best friend. Go bravely into that good night ma. Your love lives on…in us.
Predeceasing her are Peter and Olive Derosbie (parents), Gail Church, and Carol Derosbie (sisters).
Surviving Dolores are her children; Doug Rylands; aka Baby Jesus – he could do no wrong according to mom (eye roll…), Mike Rylands; aka The Medicine Man – the distilled kind (Amanda Cheshire), Dawna-Jo Bellerose; aka The Saint – in her eyes only (Donny Kerr), Laurie Bellerose; aka The Jokester – a legend in her own mind (Derwood Smith), and Vicky Cummings aka The Bank – Capital One, what’s in her wallet?, (Rod Cummings). As well as her siblings, Gloria (Stan) Mcleod, Sandy (Marley) McDougall, and Peter (Lynn) Derosbie. Her grandchildren; Erika, Logan, Christoffer, Kourtney, Matt, Christine, Mike Jr, and many great-grandchildren.
