Born August 19, 1932, died peacefully June 9, 2021 after a full and beautiful life. Predeceased by her husband George, her son Richard and her siblings David, John, and Jenepher. Mourning her loss and regaling each other with wonderful stories of Di are her children: Douglas (Camille), Kenneth, Martha (Penina), Peggy, Bruce (Margaret). She will be missed by her grandchildren Emma, Mickey, Alice, Beth, Santi, Juan, and Gili. Her many nieces and nephews and her countless friends remember her laugh and the wonderful times they spent with her.
Our mother was a matriarch descended from a line of matriarchs. Mum was a kind and generous woman who had a wicked sense of humour. She taught us that books could be used for knowledge, pleasure and escape. As children, she showed us the magic of being read aloud to each night as we snuggled in our beds.
Mum was equally happy being outside as she was reading. She loved hiking in the fall colours, skiing and skating in the winter, and biking and admiring spring wildflowers. She wilted in summer heat.
Our mum was bit by the travel bug. She explored Europe using various modes of travel including: hitchhiking, by foot, by bike, by car, and more recently by boat. Though Mum was a fearless traveler she had a terrible sense of direction which lead to a nephew giving her the sobriquet: ‘Wrong Way Ainslie’.
Di was an extrovert. She had an amazing network of wonderful friends with whom she travelled, skied, skated, played tennis, attended concerts and plays and (allegedly) played bridge. She was able to ring in the New Year with the same group of friends for over 50 years.
Mum was a loving, kind, generous, fiercely intelligent and resilient human. We will remember her with great love every time we eat chocolate, struggle over the cryptic crossword puzzle, admire the fall colours and spring wildflowers, ski on a ‘blue wax ski day’ and curl up with a book.
We would like to thank Dr. Schatz, Hilary, Elena, Lourdes, Mila and the staff at the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence for their wonder care of our mother. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the TransCanada Trails (tctrail.ca/gift-in-tribute) or Unicef (unicef.ca).
