HOLLAND, Dennis Gordon – Brule, Colchester County: April 18, 1935 to August 7, 2021. Dennis Holland passed away peacefully at the age of 86 with his daughters by his side. Dennis was born and raised in Halifax. Growing up, he spent cherished summers at his mother’s family’s farm in Princeport, Colchester County. He obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University and worked in financial services before dedicating himself to a rewarding career as an economic development advisor with the Province of Nova Scotia. A keen sports-lover, it was only fitting that Dennis met the love of his life, Patience “Pat” Millicent (Dyer) at a baseball game. They married in 1962 and raised their three children in Halifax, with summers spent at their cottage in the beautiful community of Brule. Upon retirement, they made Brule their permanent residence, renovating a home with a majestic view of the Northumberland Strait. The Hollands were active volunteers with the Brule Fossil Center and the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Foundation. Before retirement, Dennis also donated his time and financial know-how in support of the City Mission (Brunswick Street Mission) in Halifax. Dennis never tired of life’s simple pleasures – tending his property, birdwatching, and taking in breathtaking sunsets over the Strait. He loved animals, especially his and Pat’s beloved shelties. Dennis enjoyed chats with neighbours and friends, daily phone calls with his children, as well as their letters and visits. He was always up for a lively conversation about current events or sports and was mostly tolerant of playful jibes about his favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dennis loved his home and his independence, drives to get milkshakes and trips into Tatamagouche. He spent his final days at home with his daughters and faithful dog, Laddie. Left to cherish Dennis’ memory are daughters, Karen (Jim Riley), New Jersey; Sara, Vancouver; son, David, Halifax. Dennis will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Holly and Mark, and great-grandson, Jackson. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Clyde W. and Mona (Hughes) Holland, brother Dr. James Holland, and his beloved wife of 50 years, Pat. The family extends its most heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbours who offered support and companionship to Dennis over the years, particularly most recently as his health declined. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Robert Bush and the nursing and palliative staff of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital for their thoughtful care and attention during the last few months of Dennis’ life. Final care has been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche, with a celebration of life to be held this fall.
