June 16, 1942 – January 22, 2021
Held by those closest to him, Den slipped away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, Ontario, after a tenacious 6-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Dennis was the mischievous 10th child of 10 born to the late Robert John and Louisa (Bernard) Patterson. Treasured husband and partner of Lianne (Fulford) for 28 years, her close friend and ally for 35 years; cherished, fun-loving, and fierce Dad of Emma (Mark). Brother of Selma Taylor and Leonard (Marjorie) Patterson. Predeceased by siblings John, Elsie, Audrey, Georgena, Bernard, Bob, and Doug. Den is lovingly remembered by his mother-in-law, brothers & sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Den was known for his huge smile, big chuckle, and strong bear hugs. His presence lit up each room he entered, and he easily connected with people, striking up a conversation with anyone. Den was always prepared to share his opinion (whether you wanted to hear it or not), never missed a 50% off item at the grocery store (whether it was on the list or not), collected treasures on the side of the road during his travels (much to the distain of Lianne), and always repurposed items at the end of their useful life (or stored them until he came up with a use for them). Den would often sing a line from a song when he heard a word that prompted it and had many quirky sayings (i.e. some days chickens…some days feathers…). Den was passionately proud of his family and their biggest supporter and cheerleader.
Den proved his true character during his cancer treatments at Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre for 6+ years where he displayed profound patience, understanding and courage. He and Lianne made deep, meaningful connections with Den’s medical team. Den’s warmth and care extended to those caring for him, including the oncology nursing staff, receptionists, lab technicians and physicians. We extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Derek Nay, Nurse Tracey, Dr. Rouslan Kotchetkov, Receptionist Sandy, and all the oncology nurses, especially Terri Widawski, for their exceptional compassion and care.
In keeping with Den’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will occur in the future. Memorial donations to Collier Street United Church can be made in Den’s name as expressions of sympathy. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.steckleygooderham.com
