David K. Chomyn
Left this world for heaven’s shores at the young age of 67 on September 3, 2021.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Ann and Mike Chomyn. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Olga and stepson David Poulton. Left to miss him every day are his wife Eunice, daughter Stacey (Chris Chastain), son Clayton (Diana), stepsons Todd Poulton (Leisa) and Craig Poulton (Jacqueline), 7 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, sister Josie (Cam Scheelhaase), brothers Pete (Barbara), Ray (Sharon), Walt (Denise) and Cam (Carol) Chomyn and their families. Sister-in-law Velma (Jim Bell) and their family.
He loved hockey. He talked often about playing hockey in various towns in Saskatchewan. He was goalie in the days before helmets, proper masks and heavy pads, so wore many bruises during those cold winter days. And he was a Canucks fan no matter where he lived.
His trades were many; chef, master tile/marble/granite installer, flooring installer, renovator and could manage most building trades if necessary.
His gift was friendship. He never went anywhere without someone nodding his direction in a casual hello. He made friends everywhere he went. He was friendly to construction customers, servers in restaurants, gas station attendants, those in every business he frequented, so everyone felt they had met a friend. He didn’t care if you were rich or poor, the boss or floor sweeper, you were a person worth his time and a conversation, with few exceptions.
He was known by some as the tile guy with the white dog. He loved his dogs and mourned every loss. No dog was too old to learn new tricks while the grout dried. Sit, sit up, beg, dance, pray… they all loved him enough to want to please him.
When not working, he was fishing or dreaming about fishing. He used to say the only thing better than owning your own boat is having friends with a boat. There was not better weekend than one spent driving down long rough mountain roads to a favorite fishing spot with his fly rod, pontoon boat and fishing partner along.
Pancreatic cancer is no respecter of persons, and despite early surgery, (and he did love showing his scar), we only had the joy of Dave for another 2 ½ years. We were all surprised by the suddenness of his passing, but he faced his diagnosis with dignity and acceptance and the peace that came from his deep faith in God. He didn’t talk about it a lot, but his love for people and his desire to help others came from his faith. He was also involved in AA and always said “the reward for a living a good life is a good life”. Because of those steps he could “get to” work, love, and live that good life. He adopted a child through Compassion Canada, loved and prayed for little Alejandra.
The family is grateful for the compassionate kindness of Dr Reggler and the staff of Comox Hospice.
Donations to Canadian Cancer Society or Compassion Canada would have pleased Dave.

A service will be held to honor Dave’s life but due to ever changing COVID restrictions we will release details as we are able. Until then condolence messages and memories and stories (he would want funny ones) about Dave gratefully accepted.
