DANIEL, Dr. Hans Rudi
24 June 1926 – 16 December 2021
Remember in Prayers
The Lord God called today, my beloved husband, our dear father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Dr. Hans Rudi Daniel, passed away in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 95 years.
Hans was born in Velbert, Germany AD 1926 June 24. He was enrolled in the Oberschule until he was called up to serve in the Reichsarbeitsdienst Dec 01, 1943. Heutililized the time from his discharge to his call to the Luftwaffe Aug 15, 1944 to learn the gliding sport. In early March 1945, he was transferred to a paratroop regiment to defend Holland. He took part in the retreat of the German army until he was taken prisoner at Altenoytenear Oldenburg April 14, 1945. He remained a prisoner of war in Brussels until he was moved to Hoek van Holland in the middle of July to work as a carpenter and soon as interpreter for the British. In June 1946 his company was sent to Hamburg, where he immediately took advantage of the opportunity to escape.
He returned to technical school and obtained his Abitur in March 1947. Hereupon he commenced an apprenticeship as carpenter in his father’s business. He worked as a journeyman until he was accepted by the Technical University of Hanover in November 1950. He met his future wife Martha Enck, on the second day of Christmas, 1949 while he was visiting a former prisoner who happened to be Martha’s cousin. On the 14th day of January, next year they promised to marry. It was not possible at this time in Germany to study and support a family. They heard about Canada that was aggressively searching for immigrants and thus applied for immigration. The civil marriage ceremony took place on 15 December 1951. The church ceremony took place 1952 April 16 and 10 days later Hans left for Canada.
On his arrival in Regina he found work as a draughtsman the very first day and as carpenter next spring. Three years later he continued his studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon his graduation in May 1958 he was employed by the Department of Highways in its bridge branch. In 1964 he obtained a M. Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering from the same university and in May 1972 a Ph. D. from the University of Calgary. His beloved wife supported his education and ambitious career. In Regina she bore him four children and in Calgary the youngest daughter.
Professionally Hans worked in many disciplines of consulting engineering. In 1989 he founded his own company. He remembers most dearly his involvement in the Hibernia platform that took him to Paris and then to St. John’s, Newfoundland. His last assignment was a design check on the piers of the Stoney Trail bridge in Calgary. In 1998 he retired to spend more time with his family and to indulge in sports and the study of languages.
Hans devoted all his love to his wife and his family. He always found time to join his children in various activities of sports and hiking. To give them a diversified education he instructed them in German and Latin. Even now in his retirement he found pleasure and satisfaction to join his children and grandchildren in many activities. He has tried to live according to the Christian faith hoping that his children will follow him therein.
